She awoke with her face against cold, damp dirt. Morning sunlight cast a silent glow on the earth below, and somewhere nearby a bird began to sing.
She slowly pulled herself into a sitting position and looked around in confusion.
Where am I?
Tall trees and wild shrubs surrounded her, indicating she was in a forest.
A deserted and unfamiliar forest.
Carefully she stood and turned around, searching for anything that would help explain where she was. Her eyes canvassed the area, but nothing was familiar.
Nothing triggered any memory as to why she’d slept alone in the woods.
Nothing triggered any memory as to how she’d arrived there.
Nothing triggered...any memory at all....
Her breathing became more rapid as she tried to remember. She looked around desperately, her long dark hair swinging around her head as she spun in circles.
She glanced down at the clothes she wore and furrowed her brow in puzzlement. She didn’t remember getting dressed.
She began to panic.

Tristan watched the brilliant blue light fade from Scarlet’s eyes.
“Scar!” he cried.
No, no, no!
He shifted her gently, drawing her closer to his body. Suffocating in fear, he cupped the side of her face with a shaky hand. “Scar…?” His vision went blurry. “Come back to me, Scar. Come on.” He blinked tears away. “Please….”
Scarlet’s body went limp in his arms and cold panic froze his lungs. He felt inside himself, trying to find Scarlet’s heartbeat amidst the pain and tightness in his chest.
He searched…and searched….
He blinked away more tears and searched some more….

“Because I know.” Daemon appeared in front of me, eyes narrowed. He thumped his hand off his chest, directly above his heart. “Because I know what I feel in here. And I’m not the type of person to run from anything, no matter how hard it is. I’d rather face-plant against a brick wall than lice for the rest of my life wondering what could’ve been. And you know what? I don’t think you were the type to run either. Maybe I was wrong.” Stunned, I pulled my hands out and brushed my hair back.
