Chloe Carpenter isn't like other women. She can communicate with animals. A gift she unwrapped following one of her frequent dances with death.  In her otherwise wacky life, she's finally found a semblance of sanity working at the Plum Beach Wildlife Park, where her unique talents can make life or death differences for the animals in her care. That semblance is shattered when a new veterinarian roars into the park in his spiffed up sports car and sets his golden gaze on her. If she had her way, he'd roar right back out.
Problem: He's her new coworker and he's saved her life twice - in the past twenty-four hours.
Zane Marshall, Enforcer for the Pacific Pack of purebred werewolves, has a job to do - figure out who or what is mutilating the young men of Plum Beach.
With orders to find the woman who talks to animals, he accepts a position working alongside the fiery Chloe Carpenter, a female who ignites his interest far more than he ever expected. Remarkably, she's the one elusive female with potential to bring meaning and passion to his empty existence.
 Problem: She despises him.
Together, they're forced to unravel a mystery of supernatural proportions, a murderous mystery with eternal implications for everyone. In the process, they discover opposites really do attract.
Major Problem: Zane is pledged to another woman, and she'll do anything to keep him from Chloe.

About the Author:
Like most authors, Carol Van Atta is no stranger to the written word. She penned a short novel at age 12 (somewhat frightening illustrations included, and lots of bunnies were involved), and had a creative writing piece published in her high school newspaper (about David Bowie's Diamond Dogs LP). Yes, she's an ex-80's chick.
Devouring books from numerous genres, Carol developed a deep thirst/hunger for more reading material, and could almost always be found with her nose in a book.
She has contributed to several popular inspirational anthologies and devotional books, and lives in the rainy wetland of Oregon with a terrifying teen (another in college) and a small zoo of animals. She is taking an undetermined hiatus away from inspirational writing to delve into her darker side. (Though you can check out her latest spiritual suspense novel, Soul Defenders). It is rumored that this genre-jumping occurred after Carol discovered too suspicious red marks on her neck, and experienced an unquenchable urge to howl at the moon.

Excerpt from I Kissed a Dog/Carol Van Atta

We pulled into Will’s gravel driveway about thirty minutes later. I could see his treasured quads parked off to the side of the garage. He’d been a great driver, somewhat of a daredevil, but good enough to convince me into taking a long thrill ride on the dunes last summer. It was almost impossible for me to accept that he was dead — killed — and would never ride again.
The police team, swarming over his property like flies on a corpse, was what convinced me.
“This way,” Officer Tate directed.
Several colleagues acknowledged him but gave me cautious looks. I wondered if they knew the reason for my presence. If so, they weren’t sold on my special skills. I recognized the FBI agent from the news. He glanced our way without any official acknowledgment.
My arm hairs stood at full attention when his eyes met mine. He gave me what my mom referred to as the major heebie jeebies. I decided right then I didn’t like or trust Agent Green. Zane wasn’t the only one with good instincts.
“You ready?” Before I realized what he was doing, Zane rested his hand on my arm. The electricity remained, but this time it felt less intense, yet no less pleasurable. His touch provided a calm and confident feeling I was grateful for.
You are a good woman echoed through my tumultuous thoughts. As much as I’d like to believe otherwise, Zane was the reassuring presence I was desperate for right now.
Remembering why I was here, I nodded at Officer Tate. “Take me to talk with the animals.” I hoped I sounded halfway pleasant — anything to slice through the gloom that hung over the crime scene. My earlier morning cheer had been replaced by a grim sense of duty.
Exiting Will’s house, a woman approached. “You must be Chloe Carpenter. I’m Detective Davis. You are?” She looked at Zane with open approval.
“Dr. Marshall. I’m the new wildlife vet down at the park.” He extended his hand.
She disregarded it and jotted something in her flip pad; the evidence of her approval gone like it’d never existed, replaced with suspicion. “I may want to talk with you later, Dr. Marshall.”
I attempted to swallow my surprise. So, not all women were automatically under his spell. Even more unexpected, though, was my intense desire to protect him from her probing eyes. As if aware of my intentions, she gave a curt nod and strode away.
Inside the house, everything appeared undisturbed. A man was dusting for prints and other law enforcement personnel were removing plastic bags of evidence.
I couldn’t begin to imagine how I’d feel right now had we been lovers. Once again, my commitment to maintaining my virginity had saved me from additional heartache.
“Here’s Junior. The cat took off.” Another officer led a young pit bull into the room.
I confirmed the puppy’s leash was secure. I’d never forgotten or forgiven the pit bull that had escaped with my favorite shoe.
“Hey, little guy.” I had to admit he was adorable. His stubbed-tail wiggled and he yipped, excited by the attention. “You sure are cute.” He squirmed and pranced around us more like a pony than a pit. I realized I’d have to hold him and get him settled down if I was going to retrieve any information other than: Pet me! Pet me! I like you! Pet me!
After some reassuring whispers and gentle strokes, Junior calmed; his round puppy-eyes melting into mine. For a brief scary second, I couldn’t see or hear anything. Then the memories roared into my mind like a tornado. Woman. Sex. She smelled like a dog. The pictures were beyond my wildest and most horrifying nightmares.
A redheaded woman was clinging to Will like a rider on a bucking bronco, her head thrown back in ecstasy. Following their vigorous coupling, everything blurred. She changed into something I couldn’t explain. Either that or she’d let a wolf the size of a grizzly into the bedroom.
All I knew for certain was that Will hadn’t been stabbed.
He’d been ripped to shreds.

Just Because: Much of I Kissed a Dog takes place on the Oregon Coast, in the fictional town of Plum Beach. However, Florence, where Chloe lives, is an actual coastal town known for its sand dunes, making it an ideal place for Will to ride his quads. Check out the photos showcasing the dunes in Florence, Oregon.

Excerpt Two from I Kissed a Dog/Carol Van Atta

“Calm down, Missy.” Zane hovered over the female Zebra. His current caring demeanor belied his feral nature as a werewolf.
Standing just inside the door, I could sense Missy’s terror. She saw Zane as a hunter not a healer. I wondered if he was even a real veterinarian.
“Are you planning to help or just watch me struggle?’ Zane asked, eyebrows raised.
“Oh, I don’t know. She thinks you’re going to eat her for breakfast.”
“You think you’re so cute, don’t you? Do you have any idea what you’ve got us into?” He moved away from the squirming filly to face me.
“Me?” How in the world could he blame me for his brutal rampage? And why did I still find him so darn delectable? My so-called disgust had vanished, replaced by an unacceptable craving to feel his mouth on mine. I forced myself to think of the bloody men in the field. That did the trick. My loathing returned.
“Yes! You! When I said ‘stay in the bar,’ did that not mean stay in the bar?” He stepped closer, glaring down at me, his eyes wild with fury and something I couldn’t discern.
Backing up, I found myself pressed against the wall. Icy fear froze my mouth, keeping me from spouting off.
“What have you done to me, Chloe Carpenter?” Taking another step, he reduced the distance between us. I could smell his musky cologne and feel his body heat.
“You’re scaring me,” I peeped.
“It’s about time something scared you.”
Without warning, he reached around the back of my head with one vast hand, drawing my mouth to his.
His lips pressed against mine; I melted — my knees all rubbery. Sensing my dilemma, his other hand slid around my waist pulling me closer.
To my dismay, he was hard — everywhere.
A little moan escaped from the back of my throat as I parted my lips, allowing him to explore my mouth. Sighing with pleasure, my hands moved of their own accord, finding their way around his neck and into the thickness of his dark waves. His hair was as I’d imagined, soft yet dense.
A delicious wildness hummed between us, I was reeling from its intensity.
Missy’s distinct braying-bark tore through my mind, reminding me I was locking lips with a vicious, inhuman beast, all while the zebra looked on, fearing not only for her own safety, but also, from the images she was firing my way, for mine.
“The zebra needs you,” I whispered.
“From what I can tell, you need me more.” Zane smirked.
“O-o-o-o-o … you.” The words wouldn’t form.
So much for self-control.
Deciding to hammer my raging hormones into submission, I approached Missy with caution. I could see the pain and terror in her eyes. Apprehensive, she snorted as Zane moved closer.
“You’re scaring her. How can you be a vet when the animals see you as a predator?”
“I’m great with lions, tigers, and bears, oh my.”
For a moment I just stared — a werewolf joking about the Wizard of Oz. Could things get any stranger?
I should have known better than even to think the question.

Just for Fun and Just Because: Both Chloe and Zane work with animals at a wildlife park in the fictional town of Plum Beach, Oregon. Plum Beach is actually a substitution for the real coastal town on the Oregon Coast: Bandon. Bandon is home to the West Coast Game Park Safari, which was the model for the Plum Beach Wildlife Park. If you’re ever in the neighborhood, you’ll want to visit. You can actually pet baby animals … like lions, tigers, and bears, oh my! The photo below is from one of my trips to the wildlife park. That is my hand on the lion cub.

My Review of I Kissed a Dog

Wow, this book really got me hooked. The characters are likable, right away. Chloe , the heroine is awesome, and a different type of heroine we usually see. I liked her right away. She has this amazing unique gift that enables her to talk to animals, and understand their thoughts. Which is great, because the alpha male Zane, who is all that is hotness, is a werewolf, so they can do this mind-messaging as they like to call it. Its pretty cool.

This book was one of the most entertaining, thrilling and mysterious reads. We don’t only have werewolves, we have sexy vampires, fae, evil werewolves and the mutants as well. Chloe’s abilities find her right smack in the middle of a supernatural chaos taking place between a number of paranormal beings. Chloe has her hands pretty full between the sexy, rugged and very protective werewolf Zane, and the seductive and allusive vampire Valamir.
I really enjoyed this supernatural world the author created. It felt right, and I love that is all takes place so close to home for me. The wildlife safari she works at is on the Oregon coast, and I live in the mountains in Washington, and have been to many places up and down the coast. I found that to be fun for me, mentions of common places made it more real for me.

Here is a cute little part right after Zane and Chloe started their mind-messaging, once they knew what each other was.

“Your lady friend called. She happened to mention you were her husband-to-be. For us single girls, it’s a major disappointment.”“Don’t include me in your disappointed group of single girls,” I quipped..Zane shot me an “if looks could kill” look. Love you, too, Babe.Eck! This mind-messaging was becoming as cumbersome as text-messaging. Why couldn’t we just talk like two normal adults? Because we’re not normal adults, I chided myself. One werewolf plus one animal-reading-freak equaled a major mismatch.

And here is another good example of some steaminess between Zane and Chloe.
“You never allowed me to answer your last question,” he whispered, his lips warm against my ear. “I don’t think you’re a whore, not even close. I find you beautiful, smart, sexy, and a little too headstrong, but that I can live with. And, yes, there are other supernatural beings.” Shocked by his answer, I lifted my chin, meeting his gaze. His eyes shimmered gold. Figuring the color change had to do with amorous emotions I tried to pull away, afraid of succumbing to certain seduction. Intent on my surrender, his head dipped down and his lips crushed against mine, leaving me breathless as I melted against him, my tongue finding a perfect rhythm with his. Forgetting we were in a public place, I ran my hands down his muscular arms, causing him to growl, a low feral vibration that sent shivers of pleasure everywhere at once. His skillful hands caressed my back, sliding lower. “E-hem!” A phony throat-clearing cough interrupted his roaming hands.
Yeah, this book has its steamy, swoon worthy parts. I do not want to give too much away, but want to say, it’s a great thrill of a ride, amazing suspense and tension, On the edge of your seat for sure.
If you like the paranormal books like me, then grab this one, its amazing, and not like any others out there. It has its own unique great story.
5 big stars out of 5 for me, wish I could give it 10, but rating everyone does not go that high, lol

My Review

** For mature adults only, has violent and mature sexual situations in it.**
(This is the 4th book in this series.)

I loved this book, in some ways more than the previous, but only for the reason we just added some more great characters to the cast so far. As all of them, we still have Dovey , Aaron, Daniel, BJ, Jonas and Arie, and the kids, and more returning characters I love. We briefly meet Tawney at the very end of Dead Hunter, and this book is about her finding a naked man in the field near BJ’s land in the mountains. She is a werewolf, and can sense he is not human, but beyond that has no clue what supernatural he is. He is unconscious and has a bad bullet wound on his head. So she carries him to BJ’s empty house, and nurses him to health. When this man wakes up, he has no memory of who or what he is.

This one I really liked a lot, as I find stories with memory loss quite interesting. It reminded me of the Bourne Identity movie and book. The memory loss part that is. I found it interesting when his thoughts went to blood, then he was appalled at himself, and kept checking his teeth for fangs. It was quite funny.

I liked the relationship that develops with Tawny and David (its what they decide to call him) and I thought it interesting how he gets “healed” will not say what, as it’s a spoiler. I want to keep this as spoiler free as I can.
We have a war of evil vs good here, well, got that in the others, but this is a bigger one brewing. We find our cast from the other books right in the thick of it.

This book, just like the others, is refreshing, has its action and adults only sexual situations. And we have the fun humor.
I really have enjoyed this series so far, as I had said before the True Blood fans will like this series I think, as well as others that like a big mix of supernaturals in the modern world.

I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars for me.

I received this book for my honest review for the book tour.

Broken by Kelly Armstrong-Review

Broken (Women of the Otherworld, #6)Broken by Kelley Armstrong
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

In this thrilling new novel from the author of Industrial Magic, a pregnant werewolf may have unwittingly unleashed Jack the Ripper on twenty-first-century—and become his next target.

Ever since she discovered she’s pregnant, Elena Michaels has been on edge. After all, she’s never heard of another living female werewolf, let alone one who’s given birth. But thankfully, her expertise is needed to retrieve a stolen letter allegedly written by Jack the Ripper. As a distraction, the job seems simple enough—only the letter contains a portal to Victorian London’s underworld, which Elena inadvertently triggers—unleashing a vicious killer and a pair of zombie thugs.

Now Elena must find a way to seal the portal before the unwelcome visitors get what they’re looking for—which, for some unknown reason, is Elena. (From book and amazon summary)

My Review

I was really excited when I seen this 6th book in the Women of the Otherworld series was about Elena and Clay and the pack. I love these characters. This story is centered around Elena and her pregnancy, which is difficult, since both parents are werewolves, and this is a first as far as they know. Elena gets herself into quite a mess, because she was bored. There was this letter that a half demon wanted her pack to steal so he could sell it. But somehow the letter contained a time cell/holding cell in a portal, with a piece of Victorian England that pops out some zombies, cholera, and possibly Jack the Ripper.

In this book, Kelly has introduces some new supernatural characters, such as Zoe Tankan, a female vampire with eyes for Elena, and she also brings back some characters that we love too. Nick, and Antonio are called to Canada to assist with the hunt for “Jack the Ripper”, and Jamie Vegas, a beautiful necromancer (and a burr up Clay’s backside), aids the werewolves with the eradication and the return of these zombies, and whatever else, back to their own time. We even have some gross killer diseased rats too.

This book has intrigue, betrayal, friendships, plot-twists you don't see coming.

Broken is so far, one of my favorite Women of the Otherworld storylines. Clay’s spiral into a fevered delirium is not without its scary moments and we watch Clay and Elena become a family with the upcoming birth. The birth scene is heartwarming and humorous, and you can almost hear the panic in their voices. Paige, as their long distance birthing coach makes it all come together; getting bits of other characters we have come to love.

Overall Broken is a very nice read, and a great addition to the urban-fantasy, supernatural genre. I really hope kick-ass Elena and Clay is going to make more appearances. I would love to see more of them.

I recommend this book and series to anyone who likes any of the Women of the Otherworld books, or any of Kelley Armstrong's work. Be sure to read  Bitten: A Novel (Women of the Otherworld) first. It’s the first book in series, and has Elena and Clay.

Stolen by Kelly Armstrong-Review

Stolen (Women of the Otherworld, #2)Stolen by Kelley Armstrong
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Having read and loved Kelly Armstrong's Bitten, I couldn't wait to read Stolen, the second installment of the Women of the Otherworld series. Elena Michaels, the only female werewolf in the world, is back to take on a far bigger challenge than chasing killer mutts. Elena and the pack members don't believe in supernatural creatures and think that werewolves are the only phenomenon on this planet (go figure!) -- that is until she meets witches Ruth and Paige Winterbourne. Elena learns that in addition to werewolves and witches there are also demons, shamans, sorcerers, vampires, and other creatures living among humans. To make matters worse, a top secret scientific lab wants to research every supernatural creature they can encounter. And when Elena is held captive by said lab researchers, she discovers the real motive behind the captivation's, ( got to read it to find out what!) Elena hopes that her pack will come to her rescue, but will it be possible to get past the tight security of the compound? There are many twists throughout the novel.

Its one of those "On the edge of your seat" books. I have really enjoyed Kelly Armstrong's books so far, especially this "Women of the Otherworld" series. For those who have read the YA series Darkness Riding series, this is like a back history, and actually will tie into that series.

A very exciting book. Don't miss out.

Bitten by Kelly Armstrong-Review

Bitten (Women of the Otherworld, #1)Bitten by Kelley Armstrong
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I highly enjoyed Kelly Armstrong's other books, like the Darkness Rising books, I have only just started the Women of the Otherworld series, so i have not read any of the others of this series, I started with Bitten, and giving my review now as I just finished it. Bitten, was well written and unusual, with a fresh take on the same old werewolf/shapeshifter tale. I really enjoyed the book. I read it in 2 days as i could not put it down. It really sucks you into the story. The characters were very well written, makes you care for them, and want to know what happens. I can't wait to get into the next book. The ending was satisfying and also leaves you wanting more.

Life's not easy when you're the only female werewolf in existence and Elena is a wonderful character. She is a reluctant werewolf who just longs to be human; uncertainty and anger at her situation are understandable. She does not like her life as much as she ought to and so she escapes to Toronto, only to be brought back to her New York dwellings (the home of The Pack) when strange murders start happening. She is a valuable asset in scoping out the Mutts (werewolves who are not with the Pack).

I love the complicated relationship she has with Clay, the emotional baggage that comes with it, makes you feel for them both. The chemistry that Elena and Clay have is powerful, and makes you feel it. I can understand why she did the things she did, and why she would fight her own feelings for Clay. She tried to move on, out of the pack, and needed to do that to come to terms with what Clay did to her. Sometimes it takes time, and trying something different to find out how you truly feel about someone.Kelly Armstrong really gets this right. Those who give bad reviews of the book, because of what Elena did, just do not grasp the emotional turmoil that Elena went through. So give this book a chance, you won't be sorry.
I couldn't help but love Clay, Jeremy, and the other members of the Pack. I am hooked.

Awake At Dawn (Shadow Falls 2) By C.C. Hunter Review

Awake at Dawn (Shadow Falls, #2)Awake at Dawn by C.C. Hunter
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

So we are now back at Shadow Falls in this 2nd installment of the Shadow Falls Series, by C.C. Hunter

Kylie still has no clue to who she is, or what she will become, other than excepting that she has this Ghost whispering gift. She is still very confused and desperate to find out what she is. Now that Lucas is gone for awhile, she has drawn even closer to Derek, who has never hid his feelings for her. But can she trust HER feelings? She is reluctant to commit herself to Derek, because Lucas is still on her mind.

Derek grew a lot in this book, made me love him even more…. He is super hot, sweet and sexy. I remember C.C. mentioning that people who are a Team Lucas may change their minds after reading Awake at Dawn… and she was right.

Although, I have always been a Derek fan, but Lucas is hot too. But in my mind, I take Faerie over werewolf every time, and in this book, he really tugs at your heart.

There are other romances in this book too, Miranda and her crush on Perry, the powerful shape shifter and there is Holiday and the camp leader and that sexy Vampire….

I really love the relationship Kylie has with the camp leader Holiday, like having an older sister, someone she can connect with. I am glad she has that.

The unusual friendship between Della, Miranda and Kylie is beautiful. The girls fight and piss each other off every so often but in the end they love each other and are truly loyal. Kylie grows and comes slowly to terms with being supernatural and not “normal” anymore. Still, deep down she’s lonely since she still is no step further about discovering her true self. She does not fit into any “group” so feels left out most the time. But in Awake at Dawn we will see Kylie grow even more exceptional than she already is and there are a few twists and turns you might not expect that were truly intriguing.

Overall, Awake at Dawn was full of growing relationships, friendships, with some love and romance. Going on this journey with Kylie and her friends to discover her true self was wonderful, and I loved every minute of it. This series has become one of my favorites, and will keep a place in my heart; I have come to care for the characters deeply. Wish I could move to Shadow Falls!

If you have not read Born at Midnight first, be sure to pick it up, as its the first in the Shadow Falls Series. Also a short story called Turned at Dark

Taken At Dusk by C.C. Hunter : Review

Taken at Dusk (Shadow Falls, #3)Taken at Dusk by C.C. Hunter
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Taken at Dusk, by C.C. Hunter:

This 3rd book of the Shadow Falls series was one of my favorites. It had me reading late into the night.
If you have not read the first 2 books, you may want to stop reading, as this could be somewhat of a spoiler for you.

Kylie is a caring, selfless person who just wants to understand who and what she is. She’s a teenager with flaws of course too and she can’t help but fall for the sexy hot guys who happen to always follow her. While some girls would just do what they want and think later, Kylie doesn’t want to be the one to break anyone’s heart or hurt those she cares about. She seeks the truth in everything she does.

Kylie finally knows she is supernatural, yet not what species of supernatural. She lives at Shadow Falls camp where her roommates consist of a vampire and a witch. It can make for some interesting arguments to say the least. Kylie is slowly picking up supernatural gifts like her ghost whispering that most do not find appealing, but Kylie is getting the hang of it. She also has other gifts that come and go without control, superhearing, running fast, crushing walls to save those she cares about. You know the everyday stuff a teenage girl does…

To top it all off, Kylie isn’t just trying to understand her life and who she is but someone else is trying to kill her because of it. Between the supernatural, the mystery of her species, the question of who she wants or should take a chance on with her heart, and the danger, this book is impossible to put down. AND we finally find out WHAT type of a supernatural Kylie is!!! I wont be telling you!!
I am so excited that the next book is out October 2012!!! Hardly any wait at all. Love that!

Get ready and start reading if you haven’t tried this series yet. It’s well worth it!

I highly recommend this series, it wont bore you. The writing style is great too.

Turned at Dark by C.C. Hunter Free Short story REVIEW

Turned at Dark (Shadow Falls, #0.5)Turned at Dark by C.C. Hunter
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

In Born at Midnight we meet Della Tsang, Kylie Galen's vampire roommate at Shadow Falls camp. But Della wasn't always a vampire. This is her story.

Turned at Dark is a quick, fun and at times humorous short story about how Della became a vampire and how she ended up at Shadow Falls. It is a prequel to the full length book, Born at Midnight

This is a great way to introduce this new series, to get a feel for the author's writing style and meet one of the more interesting characters from Born at Midnight. And it will give readers the opportunity to learn a little more about Della and why she acts as she does.

This book can be read without having read Born at Midnight, but I'm glad I read it afterward. I already liked Della - she is one of my favorite characters - and was therefore much more interested in hearing about her transformation than I might have been had I not previously been introduced.

It’s a short story, 45 pages, and you can get the ebook free at Amazon.

The Turned at Dark eBook includes a sneak peek of Born at Midnight as well.
I really love this series, and this prequel just gives me more insight into one of the characters that I love.

Note: Born at Midnight is an amazing book (5 stars)! Definitely a must read if you love this short story and worth a peek even if you only just like it! C.C. Hunter does a great job writing these books, you care what happens to these characters. I highly recommend all in the Shadow Falls series.
