by Brandy Nacole
ISBN13 9781300852094

Summary:

"This is it. The moment Heaven and Hell clash. But which unearthly being will win, the fallen angel or Hell's hounds?
Overtaken by fear, I close my eyes."

Kayson is a Fallen Angel who has spent decades running from the Hell Hounds while searching for something that no one else believes can be so, not even God. Kayson is determined to find a Blood Child. But when a hound finds Kayson first, he is sure his end has come.

Falon, Alpha of the Hell Hounds, destroyer of the blood children, and devoted believer in his master’s plan, is bound and determined to drag Kayson back to Hell with him.

Sabrina is a Vampire, a half-breed created from one of Lucifer’s original blood children. After years of hiding, Sabrina’s fate changes when she finds Kayson barely alive. Against her instincts, Sabrina saves him. Now she and Kayson are both marked by the Hell Hounds.

Emma is an ordinary human, whose only problem is making ends meet, and getting over the hurt caused by her untrustworthy brother. Her everyday problems become supernatural ones when she finds Kayson and Sabrina hiding in her parent’s backyard shed.

Kayson, Sabrina and Emma are unlikely allies, thrown together by chance to fight against the most powerful creatures of the underworld in order to follow their world-changing quest. But will the broken faith of one break the faith of all?

My review

Loved this book. I am not surprised as I absolutely loved Brandy’s Shadow World series. This is just as good as that one.

This story has a great new spin on vampires and angles (well fallen angels)  with the creepy Hell Hounds thrown in too. I was on the edge of my seat right from the start. I loved how it goes between multiple points of views.

I really got to care a lot about most of the characters. Mostly loved Kayson, Sabrina, and Emma, and Briston grew on me as well.
I didn’t like all of Emma’s friends at first, but when I learned more about them, I then liked them as well.

I don’t want to give anything away, won’t mention who is what, but it’s a great mix of the supernatural, and I just loved it.

Here is a nice teaser that won’t give anything away, thought it was a bit funny:

Before he pulls himself under the cover of their branches, he looks back up at me with a smile. “That was probably the weirdest thing that’s ever happened to me.” I scrunch up my eyebrows, “What? Almost falling in a ditch?” “No, being carried by a girl.”

If your like me and like paranormal books, you should give this one a try. I loved it, and can’t wait for book 2 now. Hope it is soon.

5 out of 5 stars for sure.

I was provided a copy of this book from the author for my honest review.

5 reasons I write Fantasy

So, what are five reasons I like to write Fantasy?  How about I narrow this down to five words instead: Seriously, what’s not to love?  I have been a fan of fantasy/paranormal books, movies, shows, and local myths since I was a little girl.  My first memory of the fantasy genre was with Interview with A Vampire.  I was four years old and my aunt, who’s just as big a fan as me if not more, was watching the movie on Halloween.  I don’t remember every detail of course, but I remember watching it with her and being totally enthralled.  From there it was R.L. Stine books, more Anne Rice, and so on.
I started writing when I was around 7 and while my writing wasn’t too farfetched with fantasy it was about a young boy and his pet alligator Sam.  They had all sort of adventures together.  Then as I aged, my writing became more involved with pure fantasy.
With Fantasy writing you can create the most unique of worlds and fill them with unique characters.  There doesn’t seem to be any line of ‘not possible’ when creating a Fantasy book.  Worlds can be made inside of worlds, powers can be limitless, battles and villains can be twisted, and romances can be epic.
With my Shadow World series, I wanted to reach these fantastic limitless possibilities.  My main character, Racquel, is a hybrid that is made up of four different Shadow lines.  She’s part lycan, witch, vampire, and shifter.  Sounds complex doesn’t it.  Well she is a complex character.  She’s also an outcast.  Her powers seem to be limitless and the Shadows not only consider her an abomination but they also fear her.  I also incorporated the Greek Gods with their creations.  Each line of Shadows has a Greek God that created them.  If it wasn’t for my love of Fantasy and the limitless ideas that come from creating such books, then I wouldn’t have had the chance to share the story of a unique girl like Racquel.
With my Spiritual Discord series, I continued my grasp on the open possibilities.  Broken Faith, which is written so that the story alternates points of view, is about a fallen angel named Kayson who is from the lower realm of Heaven.  After being on the run since his fall, Kayson faces off with one of Hell’s hounds.  After barely escaping with his life, Kayson is found by Sabrina, a vampire who is a half-blood child.  This two unlikely beings work together to outsmart the very beings created to destroy them.  Because of fantasy, I get the chance to share this battle of faith and good will.
Fantasy gives readers an escape outside the everyday life, much like most stories.  The thing with Fantasy books, it’s something we just don’t experience on some level on a daily basis.  Now if vampires and shape-shifters start skulking the world, then Fantasy writers are going to have to step it up and reach out for a new level of fiction.  Until that day happens, readers and writers get to live out a world that isn’t our everyday hum bum routines and escape into a world filled with magic, love, rivals, and heart racing wonder.

Excerpt
Branches scrape at my skin as I run through the dense forest.  My heart is beating with a terrifying force.  I can hear the beast close in on me, ready for the kill.  His growls echo through the forest.  I don’t know where he is, I just know I have to keep moving.
I feel like a coward for being so terrified.  Once, I would have stood unwavering, waiting for the beast to show his face.  But since my powers were stripped−my wings torn away−I have been left defenseless, weak, and vulnerable to the beasts set out to destroy me.
I run as fast as I can, never faltering.  I may not have my powers anymore, but I still have the agility that was so unique to the angels.  Moving and gliding with the winds and earth, flowing with the water as it flows lazily through the fields, to become terrorizing rapids through the twists and turns of some faraway canyon.
I burst out of the thicket that is hindering my progress, and see nothing but a dead end up ahead.  I still do not falter.  I make a hard left to climb up the ravine, hoping that the forest is more open at the top.  That’s when the beast steps out in front of me.
The being is massive, his tremendous weight and size is such that as he passes between two trees, branches snap, and large bushes are crushed underneath his feet.  I’m expecting him to attack me, pounce on the poor defenseless being he sees before him.  Instead, he shifts out of his beastly form into the human disguise that he uses to inflict havoc into this world.
“That was quite a chase.  I must say I haven’t had a rush like that in quite some time.”  His smile is taunting.
I give him nothing; say nothing, not letting him get the satisfaction out of my fear.  That’s what the hound wants, he wants to feed on me before killing me.  My fear and poor show of bravery, however, is obvious, and it is feeding his pathetic excuse for a soul.
“Unfortunately for you, it will be your last attempt at saving your life.”
He lunges at me, his beast-like yet still human claws balling into fists as he tries connecting with my face.  I dodge his blow as I unsheathe the only weapon I have, my trusty sword.
The beast steps back for a moment, taking in the sword in my hand.  A menacing smile spreads across his face before he lunges for me again.  I swing my sword out, going straight for his head.  If I can get enough momentum and find the right angle, I can take his head off and end his reign of terrorizing evil.
He blocks my blow with his forearm, while his other fist connects with my ribs.  I can hear as the bones break, the pain shooting through my abdomen.  Ignoring the pain, I take another swing at him, but it’s blocked again as he grabs the blade, yanking me forward, the momentum smashing me into a tree.
I turn, swinging my sword with all my might.  It doesn’t connect with his head but it does land a blow against his side, doing some damage.  The beast screams out in pain, clenching at his side.  Then it looks up at me, pure hatred and disgust radiates from the menacing scowl on the human mask it wears.  “You will feel the true wrath of the hounds.  I was trying to be lenient in your death but now you will have no mercy.”
The man shifts back into his true form.  His smooth skin stretches, as black fur covers his body.  His hands become sharp claws, and his snout extends, as razor sharp teeth that can rip skin and break through bone erupt from its jaw.  When the hound stands on his back legs he towers over me by more than three feet.  Snapping his jaw of razor-sharp teeth at me, I swing my sword, connecting with his snout.  The tear in his skin is barely a scratch.
With lightning speed, my sword is torn from my hand as his jaws close on it and he tears it away, tossing it through the air.  I know I’m no match against this beast without it.  Seeing the hilt sticking up from the ground, I roll in the direction of the sword to retrieve it.  The hound swipes at me with a long clawed hand, tearing into my back as I roll by him.  With no time for slip-ups, I ignore the pain and continue for the sword.   I can hear the beast coming after me, though this particular spot in the woods is thick with trees instead of bushes and briars, making it harder for him to move.
The beast swipes at me again through the trees, catching my leg in his grasp.  Bones snap as he twists my leg, lifting me up off the ground.  I scream out but continue to reach out and grab at the sword’s hilt.  Pulling the sword from the ground, I swing it through the air, stabbing the hound’s hand to release me.  It growls and lets me go.  I land on the ground with a thud.  My shoulder takes the brunt of the blow.
A loud snarl fills the air as the hound lunges for me.  His jaws snap at me, ready to bite me in half.  But he can’t move; his shoulders are stuck between two trees.  He tries pushing forward through the trees as he stretches his neck to get a hold on me.  But the hound makes no leeway past the trees.  I know I can’t move in this condition, my leg is too busted up to carry me very far.  My panic rises as the trees start to creak and snap from the force of the weight being pushed against them.
With each snap, the hound’s slavering muzzle comes closer.  The beast lets out a growl so loud I cover my ears, then he pushes harder, snapping the tree with his mass and strength.  Just as he’s about to deliver the final blow, I stab my sword up, piercing his jaw and coming out through the top of his head.  The hound collapses to the ground.  I guard myself as the hound falls, landing extremely close to me.  His massive body shakes the ground, cracking the dry dirt.
I use my arms to drag myself away from the menacing heap of fur.  Once I’m a safe distance from the hound lying on the ground, I pull myself up.  I do my best to keep the weight off my busted leg.  I have no choice but to leave my sword behind.  The hilt is jammed under the hound, and I don’t have the strength or time to pull it out from under him.
I slowly climb out of the ravine, knowing I have to get away as fast as I can. I know the other hounds will be coming.  It may take some time, but they will come.  If only I had killed the hound before he unleashed the hell call.

Racquel tries putting distance between her and the human boy but as they spend more time together it becomes harder and harder for Racquel to fight the affection she wants and needs.

Uniquely Unwelcome Review

Wow, what a great book, I was so captivated by this unique paranormal story. But besides the paranormal elements there is an underlying message in this story, which really touches your heart. Below is a few parts that show how she feels as an outcast that is different:

My appearance is no different from any human girl. My face is framed with long black hair. I look like your average hundred and twenty pound girl but my eyes give me away. Unlike most of the other Shadows, whose eyes are a natural color, mine are pearly silver, outlined by darker silver. My pupils are dark purple, which really sets my silver off. The problem of course is that it’s not normal.I sigh. I didn’t want to walk through my hometown just yet. I wanted to go home, gather my courage, and then set out into the town. My presence wasn’t going to be that appreciated.

And:

I keep my head high as I walk down the streets. Humans just look the other way, afraid of conflict and attention. But the Shadows, they glare. A shifter jumps back out of my way, afraid of my touch. It doesn’t stop him from glaring at me.I want to use my speed to hurry up and get home. But the streets are too crowded with humans. Instead, I walk at a normal human pace. Once I round the corner to my street, I stop.A few Witches are out in their yards but once they sense me they hurry inside. I never understood why they agreed to let my family live on their block if they were afraid of me.

I just felt so badly for Raquel, (her first name is Harmony, but she goes by her middle name) She has 4 different Shadows blood (a witch had helped her Grandparents conceive when it should not have been possible, and again her mother) She has Shifter, Werewolf, Vampire, and Witch coursing through her, which makes her different and powerful, and misunderstood. She is shunned for being “mixed” and its just really sad. It’s forbidden for a Lycan (werewolf) to be with a witch for instance, or any others for that matter.
Anyway, we get taken on this very important journey with Raquel, where there are many Shadows that have to overcome their feelings, and someone has been kidnapping shadows from all the different ones, the 4 I mentioned plus the fairies too.

During this journey that Raquel has set out on to find her half-sister who is full Witch, she has others join her, and she finally makes some real friends, who she finds out most are more curious of her, and some just scared as they do not know what power she holds.

There are many witty funny parts to this story too, that I enjoyed immensely. Raquel is a strong minded person, and I really liked her a lot. I was glad to see she does have a forgiving heart too, even though the lycan, Ethan, whom she is traveling with, and who has always ridiculed her growing up, she has learned to get along with him, and he also gets a taste of what it was like for her. He feels the stares as they walk into the main residence of the Witches, and it gives him a taste of what her life was like for Raquel.

I liked the touching relationship that comes up between Raquel and Coy, the human that escapes the Vampire lair where they meet with the head of them, he was a slave for his whole life, and wants to escape and also find his brother, who was also taken along with all those Shadows. Micah is one that I see playing a big role in upcoming books, which I can’t wait to read now.

We have a few steamy parts too, I just have to share, with Raquel and Coy, here is a good one:

He leans down, asking permission before bringing our lips together in a soft sweet kiss. His lips softly brush over mine. The kiss slowly becomes more passionate. His lips push hard and swiftly against mine, intoxicating me. He places his hands around my waist pulling me onto his lap. Now I’m cradled over him, my lips working and moving passionately against his. His hands wander up and down my back, down my legs, over my arms. He keeps pulling me closer like he can’t get enough of me.I run my hands under his shirt, feeling his skin burn against my palms. I want to rip his shirt completely off of him. Go where I never thought I would. The desire to feel alive and wanted overwhelms me. His touch brings my lonely emotions to the surface. A part of me tries showing reason, reminding me that this is a little fast, that he could hurt me in a matter of seconds. The other part of me lashes out at my reasoning. I could be dead in a few hours, and if not I still want him, still want his touch.

I can’t say enough at how much I love this story, and the meanings behind it as well as the action and excitement within it too. I highly recommend this to all ages, YA and adult alike. Its touching, fun, action, suspense, all of that with a little clean steamy parts. I will be reading book 2, as soon as I can, as the bit of a cliffhanger has me intrigued. It’s the good kind of cliffhanger, not the type that makes you want to through the book across the room like many others I won’t mention here, lol.
Go get this book, its amazing, and so worth your time to read, and written so well too.

I highly recommend it. 5 big stars out of 5 for me.

About Brandy Nacole
Brandy Nacole resides in Arkansas where her imagination runs wild. Reading is her passion and writing is her obsession. Whenever she's not reading or writing, Brandy is spending time with her family and friends, throwing around crazy ideas, and laughing through the crazy moments.  She is the author of the Shadow World Series and the Spiritual Discord Series.

What Brandy Nacole writes about:

I’m a 26 year old mother of three and married to my best friend, who supports all my crazy ideas.  When I tell people I’m a writer the first question they ask of course is, what do you write about?  When I tell them I write Paranormal Fiction most respond with, “Ah, another stay at home author want-to-be.”  My response, “Uh, no.”
The truth is I have been a writer ever since I could write.  Sure, my first story was about an alligator and a boy named Sam.  They were the best of friends and the alligator followed Sam around just like a puppy would.  But as I grew up, my interest started growing in the paranormal genre.  If you ask me why, I would ask you, what’s not to like?  There’s magic, strength, forever love, special powers, immortality, shifting into a new being, and so much more.  I know that a lot of people don’t like the paranormal, just like some may not like westerns or mysteries, but paranormal fiction has had me in its grasp from a young age.
So yes, I stay at home with my children, write paranormal fiction, and dream of being a great author, but this is not a recent development.  This has been my dream since I was a little girl.  I am not a stay at home mother, who decided to start writing.  I am a mother, who decided to stay home to write.  And that is the truth behind every indie author.  We write because it’s our passion, our dream.  We want to share our stories, and passion with the world.  And that’s exactly what I thought when I started writing Uniquely Unwelcome, I want to share this.
I wanted to share the story of a unique girl, who was an outcast in both the Shadow World and the Human World.  I wanted to share her uniqueness and the struggles she faces as she tries to help those that don’t trust her.  I had to share the lonely life that girl faced and still faces, and how she handles someone actually noticing her for something other than a freak.  And that’s exactly what I got to share in Uniquely Unwelcome.  Then I got to continue that story in Blood Burdens.
So to answer the question, what do you write about?  I write about stories I want to share.

My Review for Blood Burdens Here

As someone with four Shadow bloodlines, Racquel is uniquely unwelcome even among her fellow werewolves, shape-shifters, vampires, and witches. Growing up, she was bullied and tormented for being a “hybrid,” a condition frowned upon by Shadow society. After saving her sister and a number of other kidnapped Shadows from a diabolical plot to create a Shadow army, many have found a new respect for Racquel, but she is far from accepted in Shadow society, and the evil is far from over.
To complicate matters, Racquel now finds herself torn between two brothers. Coy is caring and has helped Racquel through her struggles, and Micah, who Racquel has only met once but who is somehow, having dream conversations with him. Racquel becomes torn between following her heart while breaking it at the same time.
In the second installment of the Shadow World series, Racquel and her sister Addie face off with the Shadow leaders against a threat that could bring the world to its knees. Power will be pushed to its limit, hearts will be broken, and some will pay the ultimate price as Racquel and her group of Shadows fight against an ancient evil that is determined to make the earth bleed and Racquel with it.

Why book covers are so important.

There’s this saying, ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover,’ but let’s face it, it happens.  When searching for a book the first thing someone is going to notice is the cover.  The cover can then draw that person into reading the synopsis.  If the synopsis and the cover draw the reader in, they could possibly buy it or put it on their to-be-read list.
My own personal experience with a cover design came with Uniquely Unwelcome.  The first edition cover was a hand drawing of a girl looking up at an eagle.  While it was a nice drawing, it just wasn’t up to par with other Fantasy covers.  It became very apparent to me, especially after a few readers recommended that I change the cover, that a change was indeed needed.
Why did I decide to use a hand drawing?  Well it was kind of a dream of mine.  My husband is a great artist.  He’s also my support system.  Whenever I’m frustrated, stuck on an idea, or just at a complete loss, he’s there.  I wanted to pay some tribute to his support and so I thought I would have him do my first cover.  From there, I would go with the “traditional covers” but for my first publication I wanted to incorporate him in some way.
My lesson from that, sometimes we have to let go of the smaller dreams/goals to reach the bigger ones.  I felt guilty I guess you could say when I told him I thought it was best if we changed the cover.  Being a great supporter like he is, he agreed.  He was honored that I had tried and that I had even used his art to begin with.  So together we picked out the cover for Uniquely Unwelcome and then again with Blood Burdens.
So yes, books are judged by their covers.  I’m not saying that every person does this, but most probably do.  I’m happy with the new cover for Uniquely Unwelcome and have a paperback edition of both the first edition with my husband’s cover design and the newer edition so I at least have a small token of my little dream.

Excerpt from book one

We turn the corner onto a bridge and I finally see it.  The clock tower or as everyone else calls it, Big Ben.  It’s absolutely stunning, especially at night.  The clock towers over London showing its massive height and beauty as it proclaims the time for everyone to see.
As we’re walking across the bridge I notice Coy getting a little winded and sweaty.  “You okay?”
“Yeah, but we may have to hail that ride back.”  He’s winded but it doesn’t keep him from looking up in awe at Big Ben.  I’m worried though, he looks like he’s about to pass out.  Honestly what was I thinking?  Making him walk forever, knowing he hasn’t had any strenuous exercise his whole life.  But from the expression on his face I can tell he thinks it was worth it.
I wish I could get excited over something the way he is right now.  See the world in a new way.  Erase the memory of the past.  I envy Coy for his look of astonishment and wonder.  All I ever feel is dread and loneliness.  I’m glad that someone has a chance to see the wonder and magic of the world.  It does hold some amazing things.
We arrive at the base of the tower and its enormous beauty.  The structure is like a huge piece of art work.  There are angels and gargoyles all over the towers surface.  The clock bell starts to chime, ringing loud for everyone to hear as its bright light shines through the night.
Once the chiming stops, I contemplate on going up for a quick view.  But I can’t leave Coy behind.  He might get attacked or feel left out.  I go to discard the thought when Coy says something that gives me permission to take him with me.
“Wow.  This is amazing.”  Coy says, “I wish we could see the view from up top.”
I shrug my shoulders, “Okay.”  Before he even knows what I’m doing, I have a tight hold on him.  My hands are encircled under his arms and around his chest.  Locking my hands I give a slight warning, “Hang on tight,” before launching us off the ground.
He tries to protest but it dies as we land on the roof of the adjoining Westminster Palace.  Without pause I keep jumping.  I grab hold of outcroppings along the tower to keep my momentum.  In a matter of seconds I’m up the tower and sitting Coy on the ledge just above the clock.
I couldn’t see his face while we were scaling the tower but looking at him now, I have a pretty good idea of what his face looked like.  His face is pale as are his knuckles, from the death grip he has on the railings.  His eyes are practically jumping out of their sockets.
“What the hell was that?”  He asks as he takes a shaky breath.
            “What?”  I ask innocently.
“That,” he shouts, waving his hand through the air to emphasize.
“Oh, well you wanted to see the view.  That was the only way I could think of getting us up here.”  I take a seat on a gargoyle, straddling it like I’m riding a horse, and lean back against the tower.
“A little warning would have been nice.  You scared the hell out of me you know.”  He still looks a little rattled but seems to calming a bit.
I laugh to myself.  I had expected his response but it’s still funny.  “Would you have gone?”
            “Well-”
“Exactly!  I knew you wanted to come up here but if I had asked you probably wouldn’t have been too giddy about it.  Now will you quit complaining?  It’s over and done.  So just enjoy the view,” I say, taking in the view myself.
He doesn’t say anything more and finally looks around him.  His expression is the same as it was before when he saw Big Ben on the bridge, awed with all smiles.
It really is beautiful.  The moon is reflecting off the water.  I don’t know what it is about the moon reflecting on the water but it’s comforting.  The street lights below stretch out illuminating the city.  From up here there doesn’t seem to be a care in the world.  No differences, no fighting, just total blissfulness.
An urge hits me so hard that I don’t think I will be able to hold it back.  Without even questioning myself, I stand on top of the gargoyle and look over at Coy.  “Will you be okay up here for a few minutes?”
“I guess.”  He looks at me cautiously.  “What are you going to do?”  Without answering him, I jump.

My Blood Burdens Review

I loved this book. I thought that the first book, Uniquely  Unwelcome was amazing, well this one just blew its doors off, its so darn good.

It starts pretty much where book one ends. So its like an ongoing story. I connected with the main character Racquel even more so in this book, I was sad at the strained relationship with her and the human Coy. But I was glad that she had formed a connection/bond, with Micah, he is able to communicate to her in her head, seems only one way, he hears and sees everything she does, but she can’t read him. This unique connsection has saved her from many mistakes along the way. He was a great “inner” voice for her. Too bad he was still being held by the evil witch Cerelia, who starts to kidnap more shadows again, trying to create her army, and make more like Racquel and Micah (he is like Racquel now)

Here is a part where Micah talks Racquel down from doing something stupid out of anger, I really, really like Micah. He is speaking inside her head.

“Racquel stop!” I stumble, gasping as the command screams through my head. “I can feel your anger. You have to stop what you’re doing before you do something you’ll regret.” Micah’s desperate voice pleads with me. “Please stop, Racquel.”My body shudders and I collapse to the ground. The rage withdraws from my body as a silent sob shakes my body. I can still hear Micah’s voice echoing through my mind. How? How does he keep reaching out to me? I could hear his voice as if he was standing right in front of me.

I was happy for the most part at the ending , but not so much that last sentence, which I will not tell you about, lol. Lets just say, I really want to get book 3 now, lol

This shadow world of supernaturals that Brandy created is unique and exciting to me. I really was able to delve into the story and really feel like I was there with everyone.

It looks like Racquel is going to try to change the way the rules are for the Shadows, not being able to mix the different shadows, its wrong she believes, heck she would not even be there if her parents and grandparents didn’t rebel and choose love. She is unique with 4 different shadows blood and abilities in her, which had made life hard on her, people treated her so bad. Now she is determined to change that. She believes if a witch and a Lycan want to be together, (Danika and Ethan) then they should be allowed that.

I enjoyed the sisterly relationship between Addie and Racquel, since we did not get much of that in the first book, as most of that Addie was kidnapped.

I highly recommend this book, and give it 5 out of 5 stars. It’s a must read for any paranormal lovers out there, like me.

I received a copy of this book from the author for my honest review.

Excerpt part of chapter one

Chapter One
I tug on the ropes around my wrists again but I know it’s useless. I have been pulling on these ropes for hours. My wrists throb with pain. I can feel blood trickling down my hand and dripping off my fingertips.
“Let’s see how she likes this.”
My eyes go wide as the Vampire, Irving, unravels a whip. I want to scream, beg, and plead for them to show some mercy. I don’t. Even though my mouth isn’t gagged, I know better than to make a sound. It will only fuel their animalistic manner.
Ravyn laughs maliciously. Her blue eyes twinkle with a vile hatred as Irving advances on me. I glare at Ravyn. Earlier when Irving had ordered Ravyn to push wind up against me until I couldn’t breathe, she had laughed the whole time. Then when Irving had ordered her to back off, she kept pushing. She was enjoying the pain they were causing me way too much. I wonder what the Covenant thinks about her activities.
Ravyn’s laugh is infectious and the crowd behind her starts laughing too. Irving stops a few feet away from, twirling his whip at his side. As he stares at me with those pure black eyes, my heart beat picks up. I don’t show my fear but I feel it.
As Irving brings the whip up, I close my eyes and brace for the impact. The whip makes a crackling sound and just before it makes contact with my skin I jerk in my seat. I grab at the seat in front of me as I try to catch my breath. I hate reliving those horrid nightmares. It was bad enough living them.
Once I’ve calmed down a bit, I notice the bus isn’t moving. As I look up to see where we are I notice a man slowly making his way to the back of the bus. I recognize him as the bus driver. He doesn’t wear a uniform but instead regular street clothes. A blue button down shirt covers his pudgy belly, probably created from years of sitting on a bus for a living. The golden nameplate pinned to his blue shirt gives him away as the driver. Plus, the hat he wears with the company’s logo on it.
As the driver makes his way back to me, I try shaking off the memory of my dream. I shudder as chills break out over my body, sending a light tingle over my scars. The driver looks uneasily toward the front where everyone else is seated. Some Witches had been sitting in the back of the bus when I sat down, but they’d all made their way to the front. Honestly, I can’t say I didn’t expect it.
The bus driver approaches cautiously. He’s acting like I’m a hostile person. “Excuse me ma’am, I believe this is your stop.”
I look out the window. The bus is stopped out front of Pen’s Market. I shake my head, “I’m getting off at Red Tree Street.”
“I’m sorry miss but this is the only stop in town. We had to cut back on stops for economic reasons.” The man’s voice is shaky. This is the reaction I always receive from humans. They get a vibe off me that I’m not normal. Which I’m not.
The problem of course is that it’s not normal.
I sigh. I didn’t want to walk through my hometown just yet. I wanted to go home, gather my courage, and then set out into the town. My presence wasn’t going to be that appreciated.
As I stand the driver hurries back toward the front. A few humans and other Shadows get off before me. As I step off the bus my stomach drops. Never did I think I would be back here. When I had left home last year I had the intentions of never coming back.
One of the Shadows that had been on the bus, a Witch, is talking with another Witch in front of the market. Their hushed conversation and stares tells me they’re talking about me. I ignore them knowing they will be the first of many.
I groan as I realize I have a three mile walk to get to my house. Heaving my backpack, I start off toward home. It’s a warm day in Virginia for being the beginning of September.
I keep my head high as I walk down the streets. Humans just look the other way, afraid of conflict and attention. But the Shadows, they glare. A shifter jumps back out of my way, afraid of my touch. It doesn’t stop him from glaring at me.
I want to use my speed to hurry up and get home. But the streets are too crowded with humans. Instead, I walk at a normal human pace. Once I round the corner to my street, I stop.
A few Witches are out in their yards but once they sense me they hurry inside. I never understood why they agreed to let my family live on their block if they were afraid of me.
When I see my house, I gasp. All the windows and doors are boarded up and there is a sign that says no trespassing on the door. I don’t know who would have done this since the house was paid for and claimed. I know my sister Addie didn’t do this. She had always hoped I would eventually come back home. When she left to go study at the Covenant, she made sure that I knew the house would always be open.
I walk up the creaking steps and take a glance around. I can’t see pass the boards to look through the windows. The spare key is still under the funky looking ceramic cats that my grandmother loved. Now if Addie had done this after I left wouldn’t she have taken the key?
I rip off the board covering the door and use the key to get in. As the door creaks open it seems like years of dust bombard out the door as fresh air fills the house.
Everything in the house seems untouched, proof from all the dust that covers everything. I slowly walk into the house, opening my senses to make sure no one lurks in the shadows or rooms upstairs. All is quiet. I can’t sense any other presence in the house.
I relax a bit, finally feeling the comfort of my house releasing the tension in my shoulders. I place my backpack on the floor and start checking things out. I flick the light switch by the door. Ta-da, there’s power. Checking the faucets in the kitchen, I find I still have water too. So someone has to be paying the utility bills.
While I’m in the kitchen I look through the cabinets and refrigerator. Everything’s empty. I make a mental note of what I need. Obviously food is number one on that list. The refrigerator holds nothing but a box of baking soda.
The incessant flashing of the message light on the phone has me growling out with dread. When I hit the message button the automated voice tells me I have one hundred and fifty two messages. Wow. I guess people didn’t take the hint.
Listening to the first message I smile. “Racquel I know you aren’t going to be home for a while but when you get home please call me. I’m going to be checking in every so often to see if you’re home. If not I’ll leave a message and try again later. I love you and I hope you find what you’re looking for.” The phone beeps off to the next message. It’s Addie again like she promised. I hit the message button to turn it off. I’ll listen to the rest later once I’ve checked the house.
I find everything in the living room as it always was. An afghan is draped across the back of the couch. Pictures of various gods are hung at random on the walls. In this house, we didn’t just thank one god. We had to thank four gods, unlike most Shadow houses, who only had one god to remember.
The Shadow beings use to take their worship of the gods very seriously. Now, it seems only the Witches are still devoted to their god, Hecate. I never cared for any of it. I guess since I didn’t have an actual god to thank, I felt no need to worship or thank any of them.
I walk on upstairs, stopping to look at the pictures of my family. My grandmother had careful hung these pictures in order of our family tree. It started with my great grandfather and great grandmother. They’re the ones that started our crazy family.
In the Shadow World we are not supposed to mix races. We are supposed to stay true to our kind when it came to love. We could mingle as friends but that was it. Well, my great grandparents changed that. She was a Shape-shifter and he was a Lycan.
When they first proclaimed their love everyone was in shock. Once they united in marriage, they were banned from their clans. They were happy though and didn’t let discrimination deter them from living together.
Once they had their daughter, my grandmother, things changed. It should have been impossible for them to have a child because Shadows are poisonous to one another. My great-grandmothers’ saliva should have killed my greatgrandfather but it didn’t. My guess is the blood ceremony canceled the affect. Usually the only Shadows that perform a blood ceremony are the Vampires. My great grandparents had no reason to do a blood ceremony but they did anyway.
My grandmother was a half and half, which had never happened before. When my great-grandparents saw how their beautiful bundle of joy was being treated, they isolated themselves. The things that she went through were harsh, a lot like my own story.
They started regretting their decision to have a child, especially as my grandmother grew older. She wanted love like anyone else but who would have her. People in general don’t like accepting something that shouldn’t be. But there was one that finally rolled around, my grandfather.
I glance over to the picture of my grandparents. They look so happy together. My grandmother had told me it was love at first site. Of course, she had to go off and fall in love with a Vampire. When they united in marriage and performed a blood ceremony, Shadows were in an uproar. They tried having them killed for their betrayal but the council left them alone.
After being left alone for several years, my grandmother decided she wanted a child. There was just one small glitch, my grandfather couldn’t have children. When Hates created the walking dead, the curse he created upon them allowed their bodies to go unchanged so they could live forever. I don’t know much about biology but I know a dead body can’t produce new life.
This didn’t stop my grandmother though. She set out on a quest to find a way to conceive a child. My grandmother wanted nothing more than a family. After all her searching she found a Witch that would help her. She never would tell me who that Witch was. All she said was that she brought her miracle to life.
That had agitated me to no end. I eventually started doing my own research with the assistance of my reluctant sister. We found that the only spell that would allow for such a change was done through black magic. A human soul would have to be taken in exchange for a twenty four hour window given to the Vampire. It allowed that Vampire’s heart to beat and for the reproductive organs to start working. The genes of the Vampire would still be intact the only thing the spell did was unlock his frozen body.
As it turns out my grandparent were lucky in that twenty four hour window. My father was brought into this world six months later. Shadow babies are not carried as long as human babies. We have an advanced growth rate than humans.
My grandparents had decided not to keep my father in isolation. They thought if he was brought up in a community then that community would get used to him and accept him. But that didn’t happen.
He went through the same ridicule that my grandmother had gone through. He was still shunned throughout the community. No matter where my grandparents moved hatred always followed. The streets were never acceptable enough for someone so different.
Eventually my mother came around. She befriended my dad even though her parents forbade her. At first they were just friends but that friendship grew into love. I think for my father it was love from the beginning. When they married it brought another mix into the family, the Witch line.
Soon after their marriage, trouble started. My mother wanted a child with my father. She already had one child from a one night fling with some other male Witch that meant nothing to her. But my father was reluctant. He tried making my mother see his point of view and told her Addie was already a daughter to him.
She wasn’t having it. So my grandmother shared the knowledge of the Witch that had helped her. My mother knew the Witch she spoke of and went to pay her a visit. Same happened with my parents as it did with my grandparents. My mothers’ dream came true. I was born: four Shadow essences met for the first time ever.
Unfortunately my mothers’ time with me was short lived. My birth killed her two days later. The Covenant had tried everything they could to save her but it wasn’t enough. They had said that her pregnancy was just too much for her body. When you combine so many different monsters into one body it takes its toll out somewhere. So in retrospect, I killed my mother.
