Humanity has colonized on a tidally locked planet known as Pendomus, a planet of extremes. Half eternal scorching desert and half perpetual arctic night. Surviving along the temperate band between the two, we’ve set up home in a complex known as the Helix. Within the Helix lies a highly sophisticated, highly technological society functioning solely on humans fulfilling their life’s purpose. That purpose is determined and nurtured through a person’s natural aptitudes, as read by their daily brain scans. Eating, sleeping, even procreation is handled by professionals. These basic concepts, no longer a part of society’s every day norm.

Seventeen-year-old Runa Cophem longs to be more than part of the Helix machine. Her life inside is anything but fulfilling. She feels disconnected, and longs to be more than society dictates. Inside, no one socializes, no one interacts in a meaningful way. It’s never set right with Runa. She would love nothing more than to reach out to her family, but not even her own mother can show any semblance of love for her. Instead, Runa has found solace in the ancient woods nearby, despite being strictly forbidden.

Runa’s life takes an unforeseen turn when she’s brutally attacked, and left for dead in those woods near the Helix. Rescued by a stranger with blue hair, she’s immersed into a surprising way humanity has survived. Fueled by a yearning to belong, and an attraction she didn’t even know was possible, Runa wants desperately to make a new life. I really liked this very different sci-fi/paranormal type book. Its hard to really describe without really giving anything away.

I want to keep this spoiler free as well, as some of the shockers are what were the best parts of the story.

I liked how the point of view would swap between the 2 main characters the female, Runa, and the male Trae, and I really liked both of them. It was a refreshing read for me, as it was so different and new for me.

I liked the mystery surrounding Runa as well, and some of the special things about her, again, do not want to spoil it for you.

This book is a well written one, and think anyone who likes a little different, or sci-fi/paranormal/dystopia in a YA Fantasy type, will love it as much as I did.

I highly recommend it, and give it 5 out of 5 stars. And also, how awesome is that cover too?? It’s amazing, and is what attracted me to the book in the first place.

I was given a copy of this book from the author for my honest review.

Excerpt (Part of Chapter One)

CHAPTER ONE
Runa

A long, abrasive, invisible tongue grazes the fleshy part of my left cheek. The creature snorts beside my ear, but I can’t bear to turn my head. My mind plays tricks, rippling my memory until all that remains is an intangible, cold touch. I don’t have the power left in me to fight.
How do you fight something you can’t even see?
Hot breath flashes across my frozen cheek as a muzzle nudges along my neck, making me shiver. The creature takes slow, deliberate inhalations, edging to my ear, into my hairline. Repulsed by the intimacy of its touch, the burden of consciousness threatens to depart.
“Runa, you know what’s waiting outside. You can’t possibly be so stupid as to think you can live in the elements alone. I know you don’t believe me, but the Morph is out there. With the way its evolutionary leap defied nature, no one can predict what it’s capable of now. You need to respect that. Besides, RationCaps aren’t hidden in the woods. Food doesn’t grow on dead trees, you know.” The memory of Baxten’s warning echoes from the past.
Regardless of my brother’s admonishment, I had to take the chance. After everything that’s happened, after all that I’d be losing… I knew he’d never understand, but unfortunately, now he never will.
The Morph’s sticky tongue returns, paying particular attention to my eye socket, drenching the area in saliva. The viscous liquid pools in my eyelashes, cementing my eyelids together. Whatever its intention, it plans to take its time. I swallow hard and will death to claim me.
For a moment, darkness consumes everything. My eyes flutter open as my long white hair whips across my face. The delicate braids I’d taken so much time to arrange this morning would blend into the snow beneath me, if I weren’t staining it crimson. The sweet stench lingers in the air, tugging my impulse to gag.
With no warning and even less fanfare, the Morph’s claws slice through the flesh above my left eye. My skull screeches as claw contacts bone and an instant later squishes unceremoniously through my eyeball.
Suddenly, I’m four again. The smell of death carries from the present, clear through to the memory. But now, I can’t take my eyes off my father’s sunken face. The light in his warm brown eyes is gone, yet I clutch his hand, desperate to keep his essence somehow attached to his body. The room vibrates, pulsing with an energy that makes my skin crawl and my stomach lurch. The medics arrive, wrenching my hand from his without thought, and wheel him from my life. So I will move on. So we’ll all go on as if he never existed … So we’ll forget.
But I never did.
I still hear his deep, boisterous laugh echoing through the main corridor of our Living Quarters. I remember the way my head bobbed up and down on his chest when he held me close. The way he always smelled like engine grease and electricity. I recall his last few moments, his last few breaths, as if I’d taken them myself.
To have him treated like that … his body destroyed without so much as a salutation to a life once lived felt wrong.
I blink away the memory, fighting through saliva, sweat, and blood.
The Morph’s enormous paw dangles above me, covered red so it can take the shape of my would-be killer. He’s massive, easily ten times the size of my frail body. My vision blurs, my head lolls to the side as I wait for the end.
Between the branches of this barren forest, snowflakes flitter through the air. They accentuate the blazing array of color from the sun as it hangs heavy in its locked region of the horizon. The halo is bright today, wrapping around the orb in a circular rainbow.
This place between life and oblivion is surprisingly peaceful.
Little gray birds gather in the trees. They call back and forth, seeming to be speaking to each other about me. A few scratch at the dirty snow beside me, looking for something. Their hops are odd, scritching back, a quick hop forward, just to start all over again. My memory download on animal resurrections from Earth called them juncos. Kind of a funny name.
One in particular hops closer, tilting its head from side to side, examining me, this dying bag of flesh and blood in front of him. The junco has beautiful black eyes and a white beakan oddity, since the others’ are yellow. A small smile breaks across my lips, and I chuckle.
He’s just as different as I am.
The quiet silence with the birds is interrupted as a ferocious howl snaps me back to the present. Seconds later, my body makes a crevasse in the snow and slams backward, hitting an enormous tree. What little vision I have blurs and takes on a brighter, more intense quality. The Morph pushes my upper body through a huge gash in the side of the tree, dangling me partway inside. My scalp tingles as the inner chamber of the tree resonates all round me.
The birds screech, and the one with the white beak swiftly dives in. His little gray body is so small, and his swooping gesture does nothing to distract my attacker. Pinned inside the tree under a dripping paw, I watch again as the bird circles in, and like a bomb, dives. The Morph grunts as the bird bounces off the nothing that should be its back.
The air ripples around us as the tiny bird lands in a heap beside the tree’s entrance. Gray feathers ruffle in the breeze on an otherwise still body. Slowly, its white beak parts, to offer a final exhalation.
The unfairness tugs at my heart.
How could something so innocent give its life for me? What a waste.
My hair whips in circles, striking the sides of my cheeks, attacking my tears for even attempting to emerge. The tears burn, and I struggle to blink away the blood streaming into my remaining eye. The massive structure I’ve lived in my whole life comes into focus.
The Helix.
For the first time I can remember, disgust bubbles at the building’s stark contrast of glass and metal with this forest of dead trees. Out here, the gnarly dark branches rise into the sky like they’re orchestrating the celestial sphere. Some of the trees are ancient; their trunks command the space of a building, and for as long as I can remember, they’ve called out to me, whispering their stories of memories long forgotten.
It’s unfortunate humanity never got to witness them in their glory. The Helix’s history downloads tell us no life existed on this planet before the colonization happened. Yet, I’d hoped to be granted a way to study them as part of my professional appointment. With the way Pendomus is tidally locked, we know little can survive on its own. Humanity has been lucky. We’ve found survival on this temperate band between the desert and frozen tundra.
Supposedly, we brought the spark of creation with us. However, this remnant of the past, when life had sustained itself, is evident. Even in this landscape of hushed sounds and broken fragments of a life different from my own, life finds a way. This knowledge has always granted me comfort.
I’m probably the only one in all of Pendomus who thinks this way. These woods had been my place of peace. It’s hard to believe only days ago I thought I’d been given a sign, a trinket from these woods. A simple blue crystal that held so much, a promise my journey ahead would be bearable, maybe even beautiful. I wish I’d brought it along instead of leaving it behind inside the Helix for Baxten to remember me.
The Morph snorts, evidently nonplussed by the bird’s feeble attack. He bends in, lapping up the sticky red liquid from my face and nudging my head for better access. With no fight left in me, I blink slowly, allowing the intrusion to continue. Bright light pours into my vision, and I’m floating … floating … A pulse of heat spreads from my right side, and through me, all the way down to my toes. The warmth surrounds me, cocooning me in a blanket of serenity.
Finally. The end.

I had never known what it was to be hungry.
Everyone I ever knew was dead. If they weren’t, then they wished they were.
I know I did.

Prue Ashford has been surviving alone in the Australian bush for the last three years. After an unknown virus wiped out most of the human population, she escaped the chaos and hid. Every town and city was locked down into quarantine, but that only led to the inevitable. Death.
Living off the land, avoiding other survivors turned bad, she’s led a lonely life, surviving on the edge of a very narrow cliff. The moment she begins to lose hope is when she meets the handsome and enigmatic, Shaw.
He’s the first human being she’s seen in three years that hasn’t tried to kill her and she doesn’t dare to hope. She’d given up finding anyone alive that still had goodness inside of them.
Her only option if she wants to live is to trust Shaw and he takes her to the isolated community he calls home. Being among people again is it’s own challenge and Prue finds herself tested on every front. Making friends was never easy for her and making them after an apocalypse is even harder.
Hannah, the town’s apprentice doctor, becomes the closest thing Prue has to a best friend and Nan fast becomes her surrogate mother. Shaw brings feelings to the surface that she would rather forget and Eva, the mayor’s daughter, seems hell bent on making her life a living hell.
In the end, Prue must make a decision. Stay in the town at the end of the world and learn how to love again, or go back into the wasteland of human civilisation and go it alone.

*

What Remains is a gritty story of human survival. When society crumbles and chaos reigns, people become desperate. They turn to violence and resort to extreme measures to go on living. Parts of this story may be confronting for some people. It contains violent situations staged by desperate people, the extremes that people go to to show their love and a dose of bad language. I loved this book, I was not sure I would love it as much as I did the first one, Out in Blue (not sure what that name means, lol, but the book is great)

I don’t want to spoil anything for those who hadn’t read that book yet, so will keep this spoiler free as I can.

I fell in love with Jett, and I didn’t think I would as the small taste of him in book one, I didn’t have a great feeling about him. But there is so much we didn’t know about him in book one that we learn in this one, and your heart will break for him. Wow, what he has been through just really makes you feel for him.

I loved the attraction that develops between  him and Lexine. It was sweet and the fact that Jett was kidnapped as a child and raised by poacher humans as an experiment, made this even more special to him. He has no experience with women, so its sweet seeing the vulnerable side of him.

I really love this world the author has created, with the Demons the good guys, (yeah, its strange to wrap your head around) and they are the Guardians for the Archangels who are hunted for their feathers. So they are in constant threat from human poachers.

It’s a world I have never read about before, very unique to this authors imagination, and I love that.
We still get to see what happens with Raphael and the family from book one, which is great.

I give this 5 out of 5 stars, and highly recommend it. I recommend reading book one, Out in Blue first, but you do not have too, but it will be much better to do so.

I was provided a copy of this book from the author for my honest review.

“What are you doing?”
At the raw shock in his voice, she paused, the cooling cloth pressed against the wound. “Has no one taken care of you before?”
He pulled away, but she gripped his arm.
“Hold still.”
“It’ll heal soon,” he said, his tone full of typical macho dismissal. “You don’t need to—”
“I want to. It’ll leave less of a scar this way.” She rinsed the cloth. So many scars covered him already, his back marred from what had to have been whippings. Many whippings. One more tiny mark would make no difference, but maybe a little tenderness would.
She applied cream and an adhesive bandage to the cut, then began to unravel the strips of cotton from his shoulder.
“Lexine—”
“Jett.” Leaving no room for argument in her tone, she held his gaze in the mirror.
He shook his head, but she ignored him and kept going, cleaning and medicating the gash across the front of his shoulder. She applied a real bandage. Instead of setting the tense male free, she soaked the washcloth again.
She pressed the cloth between his shoulders. He shuddered. Tending to the older wounds, she treated them with gentle care, as if the whip had sliced his skin only yesterday. His hands trembled a second before he curled his fingers around the edge of the sink.
Biting her lower lip, she moved to his sides and stomach, where the marks were thinner and strategically located. Surgical scars. An inner fire filled her. She would have ripped out Lawrence’s throat herself had the miserable excuse for a man been in the room.
Clusters of faint scars marked the back of his hand and inside of his wrists. She ran a fingertip over them. “What caused this?”
He answered in an even, controlled tone. “Needles and IVs.”
She swallowed against a rush of nausea.
Pulling his hand away, he sighed. He lifted his fingers to his face. She noticed for the first time a line of tiny needle scars on his cheeks, right over the venom glands. A whimper escaped her lips—heavens, considering the nerves associated with the venom system, needles must have caused him so much pain, comparable even to the whippings.
His eyes widened and he dropped his hand, as if just realizing he was touching his face. He cleared his throat and spoke, his voice thick and haunted. “There was a lab assistant who tried to be more humane about it, once. Against Lawrence’s instructions, she tried to take venom directly from my fangs, using a film-covered cup, like they do with snakes. But, I bit her. I was young and I didn’t understand it would kill her.”
Lexine ignited flames and pressed herself against his chest. “Biting when threatened is instinctive. The reaction is especially strong in children. Even in the best of circumstances, humans should never handle demon young.”
He tensed under her hold and took a step back, but she tightened her arms. She refused to let him distance himself, not at this moment. Perhaps no one had held him since his kidnapping, but he was so close to letting his guard down, she could sense it—she felt it in the slight tremor of his arms. If she let him run now, would they ever get to this place again, or would he build his walls even stronger and higher?
He sighed.
He wrapped his arms round her.

Book Boyfriend of the Week #10

This is a meme created by Reading and Things for bloggers to talk about their book boyfriends and tease the readers with things they've said.

Want to participate?

Then all you have to do is:

1) Pick a book boyfriend, it can be from the book your currently reading or from one you've already read.

2) Write what kind of boyfriend he is, and if you want, say why you think that.

3) Pick a quote from his book, long or short, that proves he is the kind of boyfriend you said he is.

4) Make sure the quote, and the explanation DO NOT give away anything from the book (we want all of the twists and plot surprises to remain surprises).

5) Share it! And shout it out using the #Reading and Things.

Note: Sorry to be late posting, been pretty busy, and power outages here got me behind on lots of things.

My Book Boyfriend this week is Wren, who can resist a hot archangel? He is so sweet, and romantic, and just everything good, but he is also stubborn as well. I hope you like my teasers.

Teaser #1

“Like I said, if I kiss you, I won’t be able to do it just once—”
She lifted herself to her toes and pressed her lips to his. He didn’t turn away from her this time, though a moment passed before he leaned into her.
The chemistry, the conversation, none of it prepared her for the intensity Wren gave her as he stroked her lips with his and deepened the kiss. The fresh-air scent of him surrounded her as he reached his wings forward, enclosing her in a curtain of feathers. He ran his hands slowly down her back and she leaned deeper into the embrace. But all too soon, he lifted his hands to her face and held her still as he leaned away.
“Oh, Gin…if only…” He shut his eyes, folded his wings, and turned away.

Teaser #2

Her diamond blue eyes held his gaze, and she squeezed his hands, a silent support that meant more than any words. He leaned in and murmured, “Staring into your eyes is akin to flying on a cloudless day. I could get lost in their blue depths.”
“Nothing wrong with that.” She tilted her head back and kissed him.
Minutes later, after he’d managed to keep his hands off her long enough to get fully dressed, he picked her up and took to the sky.

About this book is below. I really loved it, and book 2 is great so far as well, a different world, where archangels live on Earth and are hunted by humans for their feathers. And where Demons are their guardians, certainly different, and not like anything I have read before. Got to love Wren.

Out in Blue (Return to Sanctuary #1)
by Sarah Gilman

In a violent world where fallen archangels are hunted for their valuable plumage, Wren knows one thing for certain: the human woman who saved him from a poacher attack will die if she stays with him. The demon responsible for his parents’ gruesome deaths two decades ago pines for the chance to rip apart any woman who stands under Wren’s wing.

Wren doesn’t expect Ginger to stay by his side once she discovers his ability to drain life with a mere touch, yet she lingers. When an unusual talent of her own reveals the location of Wren’s father, Wren’s isolated world implodes. With the help of the demon protectors he’s sworn never to trust again, Wren risks everything to rescue his father, confront the demon who stalks his and Ginger’s every step, and claim his eternity with the most courageous woman he’s ever known.

#Giveaway ~ Book Tour Reconnaissance (Paradise Reclaimed #2) by Aubrie Dionne ~ Read Excerpts

Reconnaissance  (Paradise Reclaimed #2)
By Aubrie Dionne
Young Adult Sci-Fi/Dystopian
Date Published: 4/29/2013

Nova Williams has lost her one shot at Lieutenant hood and at love. Lieutenant Crophaven has promoted her rival, Andromeda, all because her lifemate, Sirius, sacrificed their mission to win back Andromeda’s love.

While sneaking out to prove Andromeda is a fake, Nova finds an alien ship hovering over their colony. Lieutenant Crophaven assigns her to a reconnaissance mission, giving her a second chance to redeem herself. Sirius must fly her and a research team to the vessel to decide if they are a threat. Thrown together with the lifemate that betrayed her, she battles with her own jealousy while her team battles for their lives.

Can she forgive Sirius in order to save her team and warn her colony?

Aubrie Dionne

Aubrie grew up watching the original Star Wars movies over and over again until she could reenact every scene in her backyard. She also loved The Goonies, Star Trek The Next Generation-favorite character is Data-, and Indiana Jones. But, her all-time favorite movie is The Last Unicorn. She still wonders why the unicorn decided to change back to a unicorn in the end.
Aubrie wrote in her junior high yearbook that she wanted to be "A Concert Flutist" when she grew up. When she made that happen, she decided one career was not enough and embarked as a fantasy, sci fi author. Two careers seems to keep her busy. For now.
Now for the professional bio:
Aubrie Dionne is an author and flutist in New England. Her books have received the highest ratings from Romance Times Magazine, as well as Night Owl Reviews and Two Lips Reviews. Her writings have appeared in Mindflights, Niteblade, Silver Blade, Emerald Tales, Hazard Cat, Moon Drenched Fables, A Fly in Amber, and Aurora Wolf. I really  love Aubrie’s writing and the sci-fi books that she has written. I have read her New Dawn series, which actually ties into this one, now its not necessary to read all of them to read this series, but it does help on the history, but like I said, you do not have to.

I do recommend you reading the first book in this series however, as this 2nd book starts off right where the first stopped. Unlike many of the other books in the previous series, which all were their own story within the same world, usually generations later for the characters.

I do not want to spoil anything so will be careful on that.

The first book was from Andromeda’s point of view, and I liked her a lot. She has a rival named Nova, who was paired with Sirius who is Andromeda’s best friend and who she has feelings for. In this book, it’s all told from Nova’s point of view, which at first had me like “what?” but it works, you get to learn a lot about Nova, and when you do, you will feel that connection with her. I didn’t like her in the first book at all, so was surprised I warmed up to her.

As usual the writing is top notch, and I highly recommend any books by Aubrie, but really did enjoy this series for sure.

I give it 5 out of 5 stars and highly recommend it.

I was provided a copy of this from the author, for my honest review.

This review is also posted at Goodreads , here, and Amazon, here.

Chapter One (part of chapter one)
If You Mean It
Bile rose in my throat as Lieutenant Crophaven pinned the platinum medal on my arch-nemesis, Andromeda Barliss. We stood in front of the congregation, like puppets, on the ceremonial viewing deck of the recently retired New Dawn. Behind us, the lush tangle of Paradise 21 clogged the main sight panel.
How did I let this primitive planet defeat me?
The violet sun illuminated Andromeda and the lieutenant as if the world had chosen its conquerors. Fate claimed me its victim.
The lieutenant whispered into Andromeda’s ear and she smiled like he’d given her some tantalizing secret I could only guess at. They turned to face the congregation, and applause roared around me, mocking all the years I’d busted my butt to score high on the tests, to get him to notice me.
I glanced over at Sirius, my lifemate. This whole ridiculous charade was his fault. He’d deviated from our scouting mission, putting us all in danger to follow Andromeda’s orders.
Because he loved her.
Even now, as Andromeda stood hand in hand with Corvus, her lifemate, Sirius gawked like a sad, sick puppy. He stared at her with such longing. I died a little inside.
This was what my life had become: reduced to a bronzemedal runner-up, standing in the shadow of the girl who’d slacked off her whole life, with a lifemate who loved the person I hated most in the world.
Next came a slew of long, agonizing speeches about how Andromeda had saved the colony, how Andromeda had what it took to be a leader, how Andromeda was promoted to the lieutenant training program. At one point, I had been the rising star, but life was a fickle beast, and if you weren’t careful, the universe could swallow you whole.
I threaded my fingers together and squeezed until parts of my skin turned bone white and other parts blood red. If Andromeda completed the program, only one lieutenant position was left in my generation, and I had to have it.

(A 2nd one)
Reconnaissance Excerpt:

Pushing the doubt aside, I watched the ground recede, and the jungle rushed around us. We grazed the tops of the trees and the alien ship came into view like a giant, evil eye staring us down. Under the glass sight panel I squirmed as if I were naked and exposed.

I tightened my grip on my armrests. “If the laser beams turns on us…”

“I’ve got it. Evasive maneuvers.” Sirius grinned like he was playing a video game, but this was all too real. He hadn’t seen what the laser beam had done to the jungle.

As we approached the alien ship, the hull stretched beyond the frame of the entire sight panel, so we could only see parts of it at a time. The sheer size overwhelmed me, making our scout ship seem like a fly.

“Don’t get too close. We don’t want them to think we’re attacking.”

Sirius slowed, and the corsair hovered twenty meters from the hull. “Keeping my distance.”

The impenetrable shield of metal stared back at us, giving nothing away. A queasy feeling sickened my stomach, and I forced it down. “Let’s get Gavin in here.”

Sirius clicked on the intercom. “We’re in hovering mode. You can take off those pesky seatbelts. Gavin, your expertise is needed in the cockpit.”

I squinted, trying to decipher their satellite receptors. Nothing about the alien ship made sense. “Can you focus the telescope on the spires at the bottom?”

Sirius pressed the panel, and a screen came up, showing a lower viewpoint from the bottom of our ship. “Sure thing.”

He focused on the closest spire. “Whoa! Look at that. The metal is seamless.” Sirius pointed to the blinking red light at the tip. “It looks like the light sprouted organically from the spire.”

My stomach twisted in a knot. “Get closer. See if you can find any sight panels or any clues as to what those spires do besides the laser beam.”

“I’ll try.”

The doors parted behind us with a swoosh of air, and Gavin came in, eagerness in his eyes. “Reporting.”

“Good.” I gestured for him to join us at the helm. “Look for markings of any kind.” I glanced back to Sirius. “Broadcast the prerecorded message.”

“Will do.” He pressed a button, and I heard the peaceful greeting the commander had composed in all of the languages of the known world. The words lilted in French, spun in Spanish, and cut jagged chunks in German. I leaned over to Gavin, “What’s it saying?”

He shrugged. “We come in peace?”

My eyes bulged. “You’re not sure?”

He crossed his arms. “I know enough. It’s not like I’ve spoken these dead languages to anyone. How am I supposed to know for certain I got the pronunciation right?”

“It’s good enough.” Sirius patted Gavin’s arm. “Sounds very peaceful to me.”

I shook my head and sighed. Muscles bunching under his uniform, Gavin seemed like he used the workout deck more than Old Earth’s archives. These were the best people Andromeda could come up with? I stifled my growing frustration. This is what happened when you let a species integration assistant make important decisions.

Although she did choose me.

Another giant chunk of crystal floated up into the belly of the ship. That could have enhanced our soil for the next six months. It was painful to sit and watch our resources being stripped away after we’d traveled for generations and sacrificed so many freedoms to find this planet.
Like the freedom to choose your job, your spouse.

Would I have chosen Sirius? Glancing over at the perfect ridge of his nose, and the way his arms and chest curved underneath his uniform, I almost thought I would have, but I’d rather have no one than someone who didn’t love me back. So no, I wouldn’t have chosen him. Never in a million years would I pick Gavin with his arrogant cockiness, or Alcor with his gangly nervousness, either. I wouldn’t have chosen anyone.

“Wait.” Gavin moved forward. “Something’s moving.”

My gaze glued to the sight panel as the metal hull parted before us, revealing the dark interior of a gigantic loading bay with strange stalactites. They hung from the ceiling like sharp teeth.

Sirius leaned forward. “Is this an invitation?”

“I hope so.” Gavin stepped forward. “I want to see what they look like.”

“Hold your place.” I straightened, trying to not let fear strangle me. “Keep broadcasting the message of peace.”

Sirius’ hand tensed on the controls. “Yes, ma’am.”

Bright light shot from the hole in the ship, and I cried out, raising my arm to shield my face, despite my aviator glasses.

Laser beam. “Move the ship! Get out of here!”

“I can’t.” Sirius’s face turned red, his jaw tightening, as he pulled on the controls. “It won’t budge.”

Gavin braced himself against the dashboard.

Alcor screamed from the back of the ship. “We’re all gonna die!”

“We’re not going to die!” I shouted and put my hands over Sirius’, helping him pull. “We’ve got to get out of the beam.”

“It’s impossible. It’s locked down the ship.”

This isn’t happening. It can’t be. It was too much like my dream. Maybe if I hit my head, I’d wake up. “We’d better do something, or we’ll have a very bad case of sunburn.”

Sirius spoke through gritted teeth. “I’m trying.”

My hands grew sweaty over his, but I held on, my heartbeat pulsing in every vein.

By Zoey Derrick
YA Paranormal Romance

BLURB:

Vivienne Callahan has known only hardship. As if growing up with an alcoholic, drug addicted mother wasn’t traumatic enough, she’s escaped from her physically and verbally abusive boyfriend only to struggle every day to make ends meet as a waitress in a Minneapolis diner.
Along comes Mikah Blake, a handsome stranger who quickly takes an unexpected and persistent interest in her. On the surface, “Mr. Suit” seems to be Vivienne’s opposite: rich, well-fed, successful. As Vivienne will learn, Mikah is more than he seems, and for reasons unknown, he’s determined to be her knight in shining armor. But after having finally found her own two feet after years of abuse, it’s difficult for her to accept Mikah’s help.
Will her body’s unexpected response to Mikah’s touch be reason enough to overcome her pride and traumatic past and learn to love and trust? Or will her past, refusing to be left behind, come back to claim her?

Warning……Major Cliffhanger of the worst kind……

This book was not really what I expected, I guess I thought it was more of a Paranormal Romance, and it’s really not. I did not know what to think of the Prologue as it hinted at something paranormal at play, but it never came up again. There is no romance at all; there is a connection between Viv and Mikah, who I loved by the way. Viv is a scared mouse, and I have trouble connecting with women who allow them to be treated so bad by a man, but she did show strength too, so I did admire her for that. I still did enjoy this book.

I watched the book trailer just now actually, after I read the book, and it didn’t match what I read very well, it does show that there is more to Mikah, but it’s not revealed in the book. I also hate how Mikah is non-existent for the majority of the book. It’s like he is gone after the first part of the book. I wanted more of him. Hopefully he will be in the next books more.

I will say I hate one thing, and that’s the huge cliffhanger, and when I mean a huge cliffhanger!  I hate when it leaves you hanging in the climax like this one. It’s like it stops mid sentence, well not literally, but feels that way, lol.
I didn’t read the sneak peek at the end, not before I write this, just fyi, and it will probably make it worse. Not sure if I will continue this series, not when and ending makes me felt cheated, but who knows, I may read it, may not. I try to avoid cliffhanger books, especially this kind of cliffhanger, just felt like it wasn’t finished.

I still recommend this book, if you like the domestic abuse stories, with a girl who learns to get strong, and a gorgeous mystery hot rich guy. Seems something supernatural is in play with him, only feel that way because of the Prologue, which I didn’t understand it much.

This story is very short, in kindle it’s around 1500 where most normal size books are at least upper 3,000 to 5,000, so to me is a novella or close to one.
The writing is well done too.
I was provided this book from the author for my honest review.
4 out of 5 stars for me, mainly because of the unfinished feel of it, and it’s just not my favorite book, I liked it a lot, just not loved it.

Note: I read the sneak peek after I wrote the review, and yes, it does let us know that there is some paranormal at play, so now I am more interested in this series, and may continue it.

EXCERPT:
He’s looking down at me, making me feel small at five feet two inches. He has to be at least six feet tall. Broad shoulders. His suit today is gunmetal grey with blue or black pin striping—I can’t tell which. His shirt is a beautiful lavender color with a darker purple tie.
"How do you know I'm not an addict?" I ask, softly.
He smiles at me, warm, genuine. "Because, you've come to return the money I left you last night as a tip." My jaw falls open.
"How"—I swallow hard—"did you know?"
His smile fades a little. "Because, why else would you come down here?"
I close my mouth and look down at the floor. His ability to read me is really scary.
"Since you haven't eaten since last night, I'm going to take you to lunch."
I feel my face flush bright red, both in anger and complete irritation. "That is not why I'm here. I've survived for my entire life fending for myself, I don't need some rich hot shot business mogul buying me food." I reach into the pocket of my bag and pull the folded up paper from it. I thrust it towards him. He refuses to take it. Tears of frustration trickle down my cheeks. "Damn it Mikah, take it." I push it at him again and again he refuses. "I'm not a damn charity case. I don't need your money or your food."
The bell chimes. We’ve finally reached the skyway. As soon as the doors open, I drop the folded up paper with his money in it and bolt from the elevator, turning left, hoping and praying I can get away.
"Vivienne, stop." I hear him say behind me. I keep going, walking quickly but not running. Yet. I'm trying hard to not make a scene.
But he doesn’t seem to care about that. He catches me quickly, spins me around. I grab hold of his arm to catch my balance so I don't go sprawling onto the floor.
