Inescapable (The Premonition #1) By Amy A. Bartol ~ Book Review

Inescapable (The Premonition #1)

My name is Evie Claremont and this was to be the making of me--my freshman year of college. I had been hoping that once I had arrived on Crestwood's campus, the nightmare that I've been having would go away. It hasn't.
I may be an inexperienced seventeen-year-old, but I'm grounded...sane. Since meeting sophomore Reed Wellington, however, nothing makes any sense. Whenever he is near, I feel an attraction to him--a magnetic kind of force pulling me towards him. I know what you're thinking...that sounds fairly awesome. Yeah, it would--if he liked me, but Reed acts as if I'm the worst thing that's ever happened to Crestwood...or him. But, get this, for some reason every time I turn around he's there, barging into my life.
What is the secret he is keeping from me? I'm hoping that it is anything but what I expect: that he is not exactly normal...and neither am I. So maybe Crestwood won't be the making of me, but it could be the breaking of me. I have been left to wonder if the dark future my dream is foretelling is...inescapable.
About this author

Author of Inescapable: The Premonition Series (Volume 1), Intuition: The Premonition Series (Volume 2), Indebted: The Premonition Series (Volume 3) , and Incendiary: The Premonition Series (Volume 4). Currently working on a fifth novel in the Premonition Series entitled Iniquity.
I live in Michigan with my husband and our two sons. My family is very supportive of my writing. When I’m writing, they often bring me the take-out menu so that I can call and order them dinner. They listen patiently when I talk about my characters like they’re real. They rarely roll their eyes when I tell them I’ll only be a second while I finish writing a chapter…and then they take off their coats. They ask me how the story is going when I surface after living for hours in a world of my own making. They have learned to accept my “writing uniform” consisting of a slightly unflattering pink fleece jacket, t-shirt, and black yoga pants. And they smile at my nerdy bookishness whenever I try to explain urban fantasy to them. In short, they get me, so they are perfect and I am blessed. My Review

Wow, I  had no idea this book was going to be so good. I am so glad I have the next 3 already, lol. Whew, I read it in one sitting, its not short either, but I am a speed reader so reading a book a day is common for me, but still, wow. I was hooked. I fell in love with Reed, wow.

Yeah, he was mean and all that in the beginning, kinof the same kind of mean that Daemon is in the Lux series for those who know of him, you will know exactly what I mean.
I really liked Russel too, and it was sad that he got hurt so much, won’t give details, but it’s just sad.

I really liked Evie, she is amazing, a big kind hearted person who thinks of all others before herself. She has had a bit of a sad life losing her mom when she gave birth to her, and her dad gone, not knowing who he is. She is raised by a very kind uncle.

The first part of the book is just a bit slow, but it does not take long to really pick up. Its all necessary to know what is going on. I love the world building Amy did, she is amazing on that. I felt like I was right there with Evie, feeling what she felt, and had me crying with her a few times.

There is some swoon worthy spots that I loved, and some funny ones too.

Here is a sweet swoon scene for you:

He pulls me to him urgently, and then…hellfire. Every kiss I’ve ever had before this one was a dusty, broken toy in comparison. I crave him. I’m not the one who ends the kiss. I have no control over the fervor that has overcome me.

Here is another scene that is so touching on how much Reed cares for Evie:

You have changed things for me. There is no reason to pretend around you. If I had to live without you now…now that I know what I have been missing…” The need in his voice makes me want to promise him anything, give him anything, just to fill that void in him. “I cannot go back to sleep, Evie. You are the only thing that makes me want to live.

Here is a funny part that I loved, I found I like Zephyr too, he comes in later in the book.

“This is very nice and all, but, uh, nobody gets presents like this. It’s a little too much.” “What do you mean?” Zephyr asks me in a serious tone. I look around again at the towering piles of gifts. “I mean, you’re going to spoil me, and then I’ll be rotten, and you won’t like me anymore,” I reply. Zephyr frowns. “You cannot rot,” Zephyr replies, “your physiology is equipped with defensive—” “I don’t think she was being literal, Zee,” Reed interrupts him with a smile.

Yeah, I am in love with this series, but I don’t want to give away any of the plot at all, the summary for this book does a good job for that, so won’t repeat that in the review.

I want to stress at what a wonderful writer Amy is. I am really impressed; she brought this story to life for me. I was so hooked, as I was not exactly sure what this book was about, I had a feeling by the cover, there was some kind of angel involved, but I did not know what kind, or who was what and who was bad and good for instance. I was so thrown for a loop at that major twist that comes up. I will say I was so surprised. I usually can get a feel for a twist, or something, but I didn’t on this one.

So I give this 5 huge stars out of five. Now to get the rest read. I will have the rest read in a few days for sure. I can’t stop.

My Review of Forever Clan

I didn’t read the first 2 book in this series yet, but I really liked this one, enough to go back and read them. I did read some of book 1 though, but had to just go read this one for tour. Anyway, I really fell in love with these characters right away. January does and excellent job creating this world and characters. I can see now I will be a avid reader of her work. She really helped me get to know these characters so well, it really makes you care and get hooked.

I think it probably is best to read the others first, as there is returning characters, but still can be read as a stand alone, I think, as it seems they each have their own story and set of main characters.

There is some insta love going on, but it is done well. I do not mind it in the paranormal worlds, because face it, we are not in the normal world, there is soul mates, and magical type stuff, so its believable. For those worlds at least.

There is some steamy parts that I liked, some of the characters really, you know, get together, and the heat was intense, lol.  I loved the way the relationships worked out well.

I don’t want to say much more, as I want to keep this spoiler free. But if your into the vampire paranormal type books, then this is the series for you.

I give this 4 ½ out of 5 stars. It’s worth reading for sure

Guest Post by January Bain
And do the sins of the human fall on the vampire?
I’ve considered many ethical and moral questions as I write vampires and humans that are juxtaposition, one on the other. Vampires have obviously discovered the proverbial fountain of youth, but how much of their former human characteristics do they bring to their new lives when they are made by a vampire?
These are the things I have imagined during by alternative worlds I’ve created writing about vampires:
Imagine: having all the time in the world to create medical cures.
Imagine: it being feasible to inoculate all humans against their mortality, a vaccine against death. And for those sci-fi geeks out there without having to create a time machine!
Imagine: never dying.
Imagine: saving loved ones.
Imagine: saving people with special gifts: Those who want to do good in the world.
Imagine: watching history being made.
Imagine: accumulating great wealth.
Imagine: flying…
Those are just some of the things I’ve thought about during the journey of writing the Forever series of books. The best part of writing for me is the realization of how amazing our world truly is. And maybe I just like to twig it a bit to add even more magic! After all, that is the gift of storytelling.
Best, January Bain

Excerpt One
“I think reading all those vampire romance novels you love so much has addled your brain, Sunday Rose St. Clair. First, it was Grandma Rose and her faeries, and now you and your vampires,” her mother remarked without rancor as she deftly rolled out the piecrust for the fifth pie of the morning. Sunday Rose, in her task of peeling the Macintosh apples lagged behind her mother, earning herself a stern warning glare that plainly told her to hurry it up.
She sighed, “But Ma, to be able to live forever, just imagine!”
Her mother brushed back a wayward strand of still-bright auburn hair that belied her years. She left a streak of flour on her forehead. “You,” she said, “with your Titian hair, your emerald eyes filled with foolish dreams, your books and poetry, are so like Grandma Rose it sometimes frightens me.  She was a last-born child, too, you know. And while some say it’s the middle one who tends to be fey, in this family, I think that’s not so.”
Sunday Rose peeled another fragrant apple, sliced into the large tin basin positioned precariously in her lap. “But, Ma,” she said again. “To live forever? Wouldn’t that be something?”
I think it would be torture. I’ve done enough baking and cleaning and doing for others in this lifetime. I’d not care to continue it indefinitely. Be practical, child.”
Sunday Rose hurried her pace at another warning glance from her mother, but continued to argue. “It’s not a practical matter. It’s about being able to have endless time to live and love and learn and—to just have more.” Yearning filled her voice as she tried to explain how she felt.
“What do you know about love? You’re just a chit of a thing.”
“I know that I’m going to find someone who will love me no matter what--who’ll love me unconditionally.”

Excerpt Two
And then the door opened and she gazed up into a pair of mesmerizing whiskey-brown eyes that looked so directly into hers it was as if they could see into her very soul. Time froze for a split second and then her heart lurched uncomfortably in her chest. She gulped and tried to steady her voice.
“I’ve…I’ve brought a pie. My…my ma sent it.” She hated the way she sounded, all breathless and stuttering, like a child. What would this man think of her? She took in his sandy brown, blond streaked hair waving back from a face that clearly bespoke intelligence. It was a good face, and Sunday Rose found herself interested in him in the first heartbeat she had in his presence. God, and to think he’s married! She reminded herself as she thrust the pie forward at him, none too politely. What a waste!
“That’s very nice of her, of you both. Please, won’t you come in?” He calmly took the pie from her hands, looking amused and making her feel light as a summer’s soft breeze in the process. He stepped back to let her pass into the familiar kitchen she knew so well from her childhood days playing with the Macalister children before they all left for the city with plans to be educated for a better life. Sunday Rose had also been to Aberdeen, Scotland to be trained as a midwife. Funny really, she thought, not for the first time, she wanted to help bring other women’s babies into the world but was ambivalent about having her own. Her ma kept saying she was too young to be thinking of such things anyway and she had to admit she agreed with her.
Having to come home to help her parents, one course shy of her diploma had been a major upset to her life. Her father had become seriously ill a few days before her twenty-first birthday and she felt duty-bound to help. Lord knows her older sister Jasmine couldn’t, what with medical school and all. She had no regrets, though her present job was not to her liking. Pulling pints at the Wolf’s Head tavern five nights a week was not challenging enough to suit her. She knew she needed to get back on course and finish her midwifery if she was ever going to get out of Caithness, and she also knew the time was fast approaching when she had to make that final decision. But at the moment, she became aware that her host was asking her a question and she shook herself free of past baggage.
“Sure, I can stay for a bit.” She smiled her pleasure at the invitation. She’d damn well stay as long as she wanted after slaving over pies in the stifling hot kitchen all day, she thought in defiance of her mother’s edit to get herself home as soon as possible to avoid the night chill.

My Review

Wow, I loved this book, and when I say Loved, I mean in the same way I Love the Lux series by Jennifer L Armentrout. This is right up there with that one! I want to keep this as spoiler free as I can, as part of the great excitement in reading this was not knowing, like back in the day, before Twilight got big, and I had read it, not knowing anything but my daughter saying its great, read it, so I did. So that same suspense was here, the not knowing what someone is. I loved it. I started to suspect something, but didn’t know what. I read it in one sitting just today, once I started I could not put it down. I carried my kindle all around doing a few things, and neglecting many, and hiding for some of it, so I can read, lol.

Yeah, so I am not going to tell you. It’s just great. It’s written so well, and the plot flows along nice. It goes back and forth from Milo and Nick’s point of view which is great. Loved being inside his head as well. I really liked Milo, and found myself loving Nick, he is so sweet, and how he cares for Milo is something. I am truly hooked.

It was like taking a bit of the Bourne Identity, doing some great paranormal whammy on it, through in some x-men and some Luxen, and big dash of I am Number Four, and you almost have this book. I do think a different name would have benefitted this book a lot. I do like the cover; it’s pleasant and fits for sure.

I can’t wait to read book two. This is a hard review to write without giving away the biggest part of it. The part that not knowing makes it so exciting. I warn you, do Not go read the blurb for the second book, it’s a major spoiler for this one. Just saying.

I give 5 huge stars out of 5. It’s an awesome story, and a cliffhanger too, but not too bad, it’s bearable, as long as the wait isn’t too long.

Excerpt One
water from a metal thermos and tried not to think about my hunger, which couldn’t be satiated in nose-range of the deer. The sun climbed higher, raining a kaleidoscope of golden light over Dad’s bulky suede jacket and my camo pants. As I read, my hair sparkled in my periphery, a blanket of glossy brown, with red highlights glinting in the sun. I blew into my balled-up hands. Applied a scentless beeswax chapstick.
I couldn’t warm up. And I was bored. Tracking deer was a terrible idea. I could be playing paintball.
I flipped to my favorite scene.
“Gatsby believed in that green light, the orgiastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter—tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther… And one fine morning— So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the—”
I heard a loud crunch, and my eyes leapt from the page. Blitzen! The herd’s largest male had a star-shaped scar across his shoulder. He stood by a holly bush fifteen or twenty yards away, sniffing the air, his nostrils snorting out puffs of steam. Right behind him was Madonna, the alpha female, and then Brutus, a younger male who sometimes challenged Blitzen. Soon they were all there, including little Ashlyn, one of the youngest fawns, and my target.
Crap!
I should’ve been crouching, but I hadn’t expected them until closer to four. Since there was no way I could sight Ashlyn—or any of them—from my spot flat on my butt, I stood slowly and ducked through the bridge’s two rail-ropes, rising into a sort of squirrel-eating-nut position, with my arms up near my face and my feet balancing on the edge of the cedar planks.
My fingers folded, steady, around the handle of the gun. I leaned my head down, peering through the sight. A breeze stirred the bridge; the rope above my head brushed against the top of my hair. My body felt pinched. Stiff. And then, finally, I had her. Ashlyn side-stepped, her small flank bumping into teenage Aiden’s long, strong throat. Aiden strode forward, and there!
In the moment that the dart shot out, I felt a rush of pure elation. As it sailed toward little Ashlyn, I watched the frozen herd, processing the milliseconds till the dart would hit, Ashlyn would fall, the rest would bolt.
But that’s not how it happened.
As my breath puffed out, creating a pale cloud that lent the scene a gauzy haze, I felt a bite of what could only be described as shock. My limbs and torso locked; my lungs went still. There was a flash of golden light, like a solar flare, except for one protracted second it was all there was. All there ever would be.
Then it receded, twisting the trees’ shadows, mangling the forest floor. The creek spilled forth on fast forward. My blood boomed like a gunshot in my ears.
I searched for Ashlyn’s body, but she wasn’t there. A boy was.

Excerpt Two
“Um… Hey,” I said. “Are you okay?”
He looked at me like he’d forgotten I was there. His mouth was pinched tight now, his brown eyes flat.
“Do you feel bad?” I asked; my voice quivered.
My victim shook his head. “No.” His mouth moved slowly, as if testing out the word. “I don’t feel…bad.”
“Are you sure?” I was leaning forward now, hands clenched in my lap.
“I don’t know.” The words were mumbled, like he’d just woken up…which he kind of had.
The guy stared blankly at his legs, and I felt the chilly air condense. “Do you feel confused?” I tried. “Like, dizzy?”
His eyes lifted. They were darker and more guarded than before.
“It’s okay,” I told him. “Tell me what’s wrong. I’m pretty good at medical stuff and—”
He shook his head. Like I was a fly buzzing in his ear. Then, without warning, he lumbered up.
He’d seemed tall all sprawled out, but at his full height, he looked even taller: easily above six feet. There was something about him that brought to mind James Dean—all swarthy and mussed, like he’d just rolled out of bed and was spoiling for a fight.
I jumped up, too. One minute, I was racking my brain for what to do. The next, he was walking—well, weaving—along the creek.
“Hey, wait! Hold on a second!”
But he wasn’t holding on for anybody. He jabbed his hands into his pants pockets and shouldered through the firs, moving with surprising coordination for someone who’d just been sedated.
It felt like forever that I chased him, his big, dark form the center of my world. If I couldn’t catch him, what would I do? What had I done?
A few strides later it didn’t matter. He sighted the pancake rock and froze mid-step. Then he turned a slow circle, his face a mask of baffled disbelief. He raised his arms, turning his palms out, toward me.
“Where am I,” he asked flatly, “and what the hell am I doing here?”
