Book Description:

Melena Sanders faced her fair share of danger with insurgents and terrorists when she served in the U.S. Army, but now she is about to go up against a new threat. Her best friend, Aniya, has disappeared while on a trip to Fairbanks, Alaska—a supernatural haven. Most humans have no idea darker races lurk amongst them. Mel knows better. If she wants to get her friend back, she’s going to have to go in alone—but not unarmed.

Melena has a few special skills the Army didn’t provide, but the odds are still against her. She’s got to come up with a plan fast that doesn’t involve her, or her friend, dying. But danger likes to play it rough. A war for power is about to rise in Fairbanks and if she wants to get Aniya back, she’s going to have to step right into the middle of it.

This review for the book tour is going to be for both books, but mostly on book one, so not to spoil anything in book 2. I will highlight some great stuff, and just give my overall opinion for you. I will put separate full reviews of each of them at the various places like Goodreads and Amazon soon. I just finished book 2 today, and absolutely loved it, as well as book one.
In book one, do not expect any romance, there is none at all, not even a kiss, but there are hints of some to come as the series progresses. This is true as I read book 2, but I didn’t mind the no romance in book one, as I do not feel I need all the extra steamy scenes for sex and all that. Just is not my thing. For me, too many sex scenes gets me feeling uncomfortable, and takes away from the story, so book one was perfect in that area.

I really liked the main character Melena, she was tough with a military background that I found fascinating. I liked that she was a true tough girl who can hold her own pretty good.

I didn’t know what to think of Lucas, but I felt the mystery around him and it had my curiosity up and had me wondering what he was all about.

Derrick I liked too, he became a friend when she needed one, and I felt bad for him and his past too.

Here is a short teaser with him and Mel I loved has to do with a large bull Moose in the front yard in book one:

“Fine, we can’t hurt the moose. I get it, but can’t you at least scare it off?”
Derrick leaned back against the door and gave me an incredulous look.
“What would you have me do? I assume you know I can’t shift during the day. Attempting to scare a twelve hundred pound bull would most likely result in serious injury, for me.” He pointed a finger at his chest.
I sighed, realizing he wasn’t going to budge on the matter. In the last few days we had learned to set aside our differences and get along. Neither of us wanted to be stuck in these circumstances, so a truce had been called. I didn’t really want to see him get hurt. The man had been a lot nicer to me than expected. Besides, if he was injured, it might be a while before he could cook again.
“Sorry, you’re right,” I said. “We’ll wait it out.”However long that took.

Nik was pretty cool; he is quite the character too.

These books are written very well, the characters are very well developed. I only had one little issue, is at times in book one, it felt like lots was skipped over and then we had Melena looking back on  the events, which just made me feel like I missed something and was reading the recollection from her. But it wasn’t too bad, still got the info.

I really enjoyed these books, and highly recommend them. We have all kinds of supernatural’s in them both; we have the fae, pixies, vampires, werewolves, mystics, and more.

I give both books 5 out of 5 stars. I am a paranormal nut, so of course this was right up my alley, lol.

I loved these covers too, it’s what first attracted me to these books. Covers are what will first get my attention, so for me they are very important.

Check out the cook excerpts below, there are a few for book 2, as they were both so good, and this one for book one I liked too, hope you do as well.

Excerpt From Book One, Darkness Haunts

The next day I was browsing online when a flash of golden light sparked from behind me. I almost choked on the immense power that flooded the room. The presence it indicated was not one I wanted to face right now, or at any other time for that matter. I turned to glare at him.
He reclined on my bed with his arms behind his head and legs sprawled out on my navy blue comforter. He must have lain in that particular spot to provoke me. My jaw clenched. There would be no escaping this sup.
He was my angel of death—compelling and dangerous. His looks would captivate most women. He had broad shoulders and well-defined muscles. Golden tones tinted his skin and short hair, along with a slight glow that always seemed to be emanating from him. Enough angelic blood ran through his veins to give him a stunning aura of power. In general, nephilim were not a race to be messed with, but at twenty-five hundred years old he could put up a serious fight. My senses hadn’t encountered many who were stronger.
I had learned firsthand how he could use his strength. He had been the one to kill Wanda. Why he hadn’t chosen to do the same to me remained a mystery. The man continued to disturb me with his presence, whenever the urge came for him to do so. Because of him, I couldn’t relax, not even in my own home.
The grudge I held against him burned deep inside, with no way to lessen it. It might have been a quick death, but Wanda had known the terror of seeing him come at her with a massive sword. The blade had cleaved her body in one stroke and given me nightmares for years afterward. I’d had enough other bloody memories added since then my mind had begun locking them away in a box for my own mental protection. That one scene tended to crop up more than the others, though.
Before her death, she had warned me there were two races a sensor needed to fear more than any others—nephilim and vampires. That day this man proved her right about one of them. He became a sporadic presence in my life from that point forward. In the beginning I feared him, but that emotion turned to resignation over time. He would kill me someday, I had no doubt. It was what his kind did to mine. Lucas just wanted to draw it out and make me squirm.
"Come to finish me off, Lucas?”
"It seems you’re doing well courting death without my help, sensor.”
I coughed. "What’s that supposed to mean?"
His eyes reflected the cold intensity I had grown used to seeing. "I know about your run-in with the witch."
It didn’t surprise me. Lucas always appeared to be aware of what went on in my life. Nephilim kept their unique abilities well guarded, but he’d revealed a few things during the time we’d known each other. I had learned he could teleport wherever he wanted and track my activities without me even knowing it. How that was possible with my immunity to magic, I didn’t know, but it appeared he had a way. I was half-tempted to get a full body scan done to see if he hadn’t somehow managed to implant a tracking device on me.
"What do you want, Lucas?"
He ignored my question and came over to peer at my computer screen. His body moved without a sound. I reached to shut off the monitor, but he grabbed my hand before my finger could graze the switch. His grip was tight and unyielding, much like the man.
"Booking a flight to Fairbanks?” he said close to my ear. “Interesting. You do have a death wish.”
I managed to jerk my hand free. Of course, it worked because he allowed it. He straightened to a full standing position, forcing me to lift my head up.
"I’m not sure I know what you mean.” I scooted my chair back a few inches. “But one of my best friends is in trouble. Someone has to check on her and there is no one else who can do it. Not that it’s any of your business.”
Why was I even bothering to explain this to him? Lucas always had a strange effect on my sensibilities.
His eyes glinted as if he knew what I was thinking. "You do realize Fairbanks is a supernatural haven? They will not respond well to your presence."
"A haven?” I asked. “Like a hot spot?”
His face reflected disgust. "Of course. Though not all of them stay for the summer months, there are still enough to be a threat to one of your kind.”
I focused on a bare spot on the wall to avoid his all-knowing gaze. “Then I’ll have to make sure they don’t discover what I am.”

Excerpt One for Book 2 Darkness Taunts
A vampire guard stood at his nighttime station inside. He would’ve seen me through a side window next to the door, and heard me coming before that, but it wasn’t until I entered the house that he grabbed me. I really wasn’t in the mood to deal with his crap. We’d had problems with each other ever since he’d taken the position a few months ago.
I glared at him. “Let me pass, Hagan. I have to talk to Nik.”
He tightened his fingers on my arm. “The master’s busy.”
“I’m sure he is,” I said through gritted teeth. “But this can’t wait.”
“Yes, it can.” He shoved me. I had to take a step back to keep from falling. “He shouldn’t tolerate you or any of your kind…sensor.”
Another shove and I went flying across the foyer. My head slammed into a set of medieval armor hanging on the wall. Pain exploded through my left cheek where it collided with the metal shoulder joints. It cut into my skin, not deep, but a trickle of blood came away when I pressed my hand to it. The vamp would pay for that. He’d been undead for over fifty years—too strong for me to fight hand to hand, but there were other ways.
He clucked his tongue. “Oh, did the little sensor get hurt?”
“Fuck you,” I said, stepping away from the fallen armor.
A couple of young werewolves came into the foyer to watch the show. Very few of the sups around here liked me. They knew exactly what I was, though they were compelled to keep it to themselves. Nik had imposed a policy forcing them to tolerate me, but they made their feelings known every time he wasn’t around.
I could sense the master vampire in his bedroom across the house. He’d had it soundproofed. Even with his enhanced hearing, he wouldn’t know what was going on. I’d have to resolve this problem without his help. It was about time these guys learned a lesson, anyway.
I grabbed an expensive vase Nik had bought on a recent trip overseas and threw it far right of Hagan’s head. He dove to grab it. Yeah, he’d be in big trouble if that thing broke. I whipped my gun out at the same time. A vamp will never stand still for you to shoot them, but provide a little distraction—Hagan caught the vase a full foot before it would have crashed onto the shiny wood floor.
He turned over to find my .45 Sig pointed at him. I pulled the trigger. The hollow-point bullet went straight through his left eye and exploded, leaving bits and pieces of him all over the floor and walls. I tilted my head. Vamp brains looked basically the same as a human’s. Who’d have guessed? The vase fell from his limp hands, but it was sturdy enough not to break as it rolled away. At least I wouldn’t have to explain that later.
The werewolves across the foyer stood gaping at me. This was the first time I’d pulled a gun inside the house. I’d had more than enough of being bullied by these fools because of their stupid prejudices against my kind. They needed to learn there were consequences. I aimed the weapon at them next. They lifted their hands up and backed away a couple of steps.
“We don’t want trouble,” one of them said. The other guy nodded.
I glanced at the vamp on the floor. He was starting to heal, but he’d be out for at least an hour. If I shot the weres in the head they’d probably die and they knew it. Their healing abilities weren’t as good as a vamp’s while in human form.
“Then get out of my way.”
They took off without another word.

Another Excerpt for Book 2 Darkness Taunts
Lucas climbed into the passenger seat. Though his large frame took up a lot of space, he still looked comfortable, in control. There were no delays leaving the airport. The whole thing had been arranged for a quick and smooth pick-up. I wasn’t used to him being so accommodating.
“Did you eat?” he asked.
“Yeah, Emily and I went out to a restaurant earlier.”
He glanced over at me. “You didn’t feel like poisoning her with your cooking before you left?”
I fiddled with his navigation system—might as well get the lay of the land. “That joke got old a long time ago.”
“I wasn’t joking,” he said. “Leave the GPS alone.”
I switched to browsing his iPod. He had Daughtry and Nickelback on there, as well as a few other bands I recognized. Maybe he wasn’t a complete lost cause. “Where are we going?” I asked.
He nudged my hand away. “Sensor, do not touch that.”
“Why? I let you touch mine.”
He gave me a wicked grin. “I’m not sure ‘let’ would be the appropriate word. You didn’t have much of a choice.”
I rolled my eyes and made a mental note to avoid saying anything that could be misconstrued as a double entendre. Apparently he and Nik were hanging out more, lately.
“You still didn’t say where we’re going. A little information would go a long way, Lucas.”
“To my cabin,” he said. “We made some progress during your absence. I want you rested and ready to assist me with interrogating a demon first thing in the morning.”
A thrill went through me. My job in the military had been as an interrogator and I was damned good at it with my lie detecting abilities. Plus I’d gained a lot of experience during my combat tours. “You got one?” I asked.
“Yes,” he said. “I’ve worked on him already, but he hasn’t revealed anything of value…yet.”
I shot him a disgruntled look. “You should have waited for me.”
“Time was of the essence, sensor. You’ll get your chance to help.”
“Then why not go talk to him tonight?” I asked.
“Demons are at their strongest during the hours of darkness. We’ll have better luck after dawn.”
“Fine.” I sat back and tried to admire the mountains rising up to the east of us. They would be easier to see during the day, but the moon lit them up enough for me to make them out through the darkness. The car bumped over some of the rougher parts of the road. Plows could only keep so much of the snow off of the highways when it came down so often.
“Sensor,” Lucas broke the silence. “The next time I call…pick up the damned phone. Do not make me come in person to speak with you.”
“That’ll give me incentive,” I muttered. The pompous ass. He wouldn’t threaten me and get away with it. I let a couple of minutes go by.
“Do you know why I’m glad you never call me by my real name?” I asked.
We were stopped at a traffic light. I’d waited for that. He turned to look at me and raised a blond brow. “I suppose you’re going to tell me.”
I studied my fingernails. “Yesterday, when I heard you say Melena for the first time it gave me chills. It was like the devil himself had walked over my grave and spit on it. I’d rather you not say it again.”
The light turned to green. He jerked his attention back to the road. Lucas was a master at keeping his emotions in check, but he still gripped the wheel a little tighter than before.

You can read my review at this post, here with an excerpt you can read. Now my opinion on the book trailer, is its just ok, for me. I am not fond of black and white cartoon looking drawings, so for me, this doesn't do the book justice. I know many people do like that, but this is just my personal opinion. I have seen worse trailers out there, so overall its pretty good. The book is great though, be sure to see my 5 star review, link above.

I really enjoyed this book, which has lots of new concepts to me. I really liked the way everything progressed. For people who really like some of the more history type books, will find this satisfying, as what’s better than to have over 200 year old ghost come alive again. I found the abilities that April has, and how she was able to bring James back to the living unique and enjoyable.

There is a pretty steamy scene between April and James that I thought was interesting, getting inside his head as well as April is nice. It goes back and forth, but is written from the third person view instead of the first person, as I am used to.

There are many funny parts too, as James is very old fashioned as you could imagine, as he was last alive over 200 years ago, and the ladies now really startle him on how they are in general. It’s funny with that stuff.

I think this book was written very well. I didn’t find anything wrong at all. I loved it, and think this author will go far.

I highly recommend anyone who likes a great love story with some paranormal in it.

5 out of 5 stars for sure for me.

I was provided a copy of this book for my honest review.

Book Boyfriend of the Week #6

This is a meme created by Reading and Things for bloggers to talk about their book boyfriends and tease the readers with things they've said.

Want to participate?

Then all you have to do is:

1) Pick a book boyfriend, it can be from the book your currently reading or from one you've already read.

2) Write what kind of boyfriend he is, and if you want, say why you think that.

3) Pick a quote from his book, long or short, that proves he is the kind of boyfriend you said he is.

4) Make sure the quote, and the explanation DO NOT give away anything from the book (we want all of the twists and plot surprises to remain surprises).

5) Share it! And shout it out using the #Reading and Things.

My pick for my Book Boyfriend of the Week is Will Herondale from the Infernal Devices series, and these teasers from Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare. (paranormal romance, its YA age category)

Teaser #1 Funny (for those who do not know, Magnus is a warlock with cat eyes, and Church is a special cat)

Will turned around slowly, wiping blood from his face. “Your glaring at me,” he said to Magnus. “You look like Church before he bites someone.

Teaser #2 Loyal and just overall a great guy: (for those who do not know, his best friend Jem is dying, and Tessa is someone he is in love with, but no one knew, and Jem also is in love with her, and she had accepted his marriage perposal before she even knew Will loved her, as she also loves him, but she also loves Jem in a different way. Jem is dying so it puts them all in an impossible position, and where this scene comes from)

“If Jem dies, I cannot be with Tessa,” said Will. “Because it will be as if I were waiting for him to die, or took some joy in his death, if it let me have her. And I will not be that person. I will not profit from his death. So he must live.”

Teaser #3  heartbreaking ~ Will talking to Tessa, and in previous book, Tessa told Will she didn’t love him, thinking it would spare him or something, since she was marrying Jem, he does not know she loves him too. So Sad.

“You remember what else I said to you that day in the drawing room,” he said. “I want you to be happy, and him to be happy. And yet when you walk that aisle to meet him and join yourselves forever you will walk an invisible path of the shards of my heart, Tessa. I would give over my own life for either of yours. I would give over my own life for your happiness. I thought perhaps that when you told me you did not love me that my own feelings would fall away and atrophy, but they have not. They have grown every day. I love you now more desperately, this moment, than I have ever loved you before, and in an hour I will love you more than that. It is unfair to tell you this, I know, when you can do nothing about it.” He took a shuddering breath. “How you must despise me.”

I hope you likes my pick this week. I love this series, which is a prequel series of sorts to the Mortal Instruments; basically in this series we have some ancestors to the characters in the Mortal Instruments, and some of the same characters, even hundreds of years later, like the Warlock Magnus Bane, and the special cat Church. If you have not checked out this series and the Mortal Instruments, I highly recommend you look into them.

If you want to participate in this, and need the button and banners, I made them, and have 4 versions of them, I have them the last post HERE, so grab the one you want.

Clockwork Princess (The Infernal Devices #3)

A net of shadows begins to tighten around the Shadowhunters of the London Institute. Mortmain plans to use his Infernal Devices, an army of pitiless automatons, to destroy the Shadowhunters. He needs only one last item to complete his plan: he needs Tessa Gray.

But when Mortmain abducts Tessa, the boys who lay equal claim to her heart, Jem and Will, will do anything to save her. For though Tessa and Jem are now engaged, Will is as much in love with her as ever.

As those who love Tessa rally to rescue her from Mortmain’s clutches, Tessa realizes that the only person who can save her is herself. But can a single girl, even one who can command the power of angels, face down an entire army?

Danger and betrayal, secrets and enchantment, and the tangled threads of love and loss intertwine as the Shadowhunters are pushed to the very brink of destruction in the breathtaking conclusion to the Infernal Devices trilogy.

LINKS:

I love paranormal books, and sci-fi and fantasy, and usually have no problem following them, and believing in them. But for some reason I had a bit of a hard time in the beginning believing what was going on. I did warm to the idea, but never really liked our main character Joanna, she was very selfish and I didn't like her negative attitude to her mother, and the fact she was happy with her husband, she seemed to rather keep her alone and miserable than be happy with this man.

But other than that I did like the story. It was unique and different. I did find it a bit “young” for my tastes, as most YA are a bit more mature (meaning the characters, which I like better) but the big revelation at the end was rewarding for sure. This seems to be a standalone novel but I am not sure on that.

It was a bit predictable, but that’s not always a bad thing. In this case it was fine, I didn't mind it at all.

I do recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good sci-fi/paranormal like read, for young adults.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars, this is a very well written book, and is worth checking out.

I was provided a copy of this book for my honest review.

Chapter One of Linked
1.     SHOOTING STAR

After the day I had, it’s high time to climb to my secret spot. From my bedroom, I hear Mom and her husband, Stan, shut off the TV in the family room before scuffling upstairs to the master bedroom, their voices muffled and low. I wait a few minutes to be sure they’re in for the night before sliding open my sticky bedroom window.
Armed with one of our many Mexican blankets, I pop out the window’s screen to climb through to the roof, working to avoid banging a knee or whacking my head in the process, while also balancing a full tumbler of soda in my hand. Quite tricky for a girl like me born with extra long limbs.
Of course, even though it’s the blackest of nights with a mere sliver of moon shining, it’s still no relief from the brutal heat. The moment I step out of my air-conditioned room, a blast of hot air smacks me in the face. Gotta love Arizona in the summertime. Since I’m always a sweaty mess around this time of year, it’s no surprise my tank top is already clinging to my back as I creep over our roof’s Spanish tiles. The last time I was up here a few of them were loose, so I’m careful to step on only the sturdy ones. When I reach the peak of the roof, I throw down my blanket to sit on, feeling the hard tiles even through the blanket’s thick wool.
I settle in, thankful as always to have the stars as entertainment. To escape reality for just a bit and go a little crazy, pretending I live in a galaxy far, far away. I’m sure this would rate high on the nerd barometer, but I picture myself living in an extraterrestrial world where there’s an order about things. Where everyone is given a clear path to who they are and what they should do with their life. A world unlike planet Earth. It’s this sort of thinking, my not-of-this-world imagination, Mom blames for my teenage angst. I disagree. My imagination is my relief. It helps me get through monstrously bad days. Like today, for example.
I hear an owl hooting softly in the distance before spotting a couple of bats nose-diving above me. Scrunching my nose at the creepy things, I sit tight until they’ve disappeared before relaxing back onto my elbows. I take long swigs of what’s left of my soda, awestruck by the view. As much as I complain about living in the desert, I admit our nighttime is spectacular. A black velvet backdrop with billions of holes punched through it, winking and glittering down on us.
The night sky has a way of calming me when nothing else can. Believe me, I know how weird this sounds, but I tend to feel more comfortable with the idea of floating in space, on the brink of discovering an alien world, than I am with being stuck here on Earth—the real world where I have no way to control or change most of what happens to me.
Just as I’m blowing the hair out of my eyes, wishing my life here could be different, a streak of white light flashes in the sky. Soon after, a shooting star dashes across the inky blackness, shockingly bright. All the other stars fade in the glare. There’s no way this is a regular shooting star, or as I’ve learned in science class, bits of burning dust and rock.
Not wanting to miss anything, I bolt upright and accidentally knock over my plastic tumbler with my elbow. It rolls down the side of the roof, but I ignore it, too fascinated by the meteor. Its tail seems never ending, but what’s even more amazing is that while it smears its way across the sky, it appears to change course halfway through its descent. As unlikely as this may be, it looks as if it’s now heading straight for my neighborhood!
What the heck is this thing? A UFO?
The thought gets me pumped and up on my feet. Forgetting I’m perched on top of an angled roof covered in unstable tiles, I wobble and have to adjust my footing to steady myself. Normally, I would’ve sat right back down, freaked out by the possibility of slipping off the roof, but I’m too distracted now. Whatever’s happening up there, I’m sure it’s a once-in-a-lifetime event. I only hope someone else catches this phenomenon because I have no clue how I’ll explain this to anyone. It’s too incredible for words.
While my gaze is zeroed in on the sky, it suddenly occurs to me I should be recording this marvel on my cell phone. My science buddies will never forgive me if I don’t.
Come on, Joanna, use your brain. No one will believe you otherwise, and a video like this would go viral in no time. You could win blogger of the year!
Hastily, I grab my phone from my back pocket, but fumble it. It lands with a crunch on the roof before bouncing down the slick tiles, colliding with my forgotten tumbler. Both are cradled only by the flimsy gutter.
“Crap! Not my phone!” I literally just spent the last six months saving my allowance and babysitting earnings to replace my old phone that simply gave up one day after a marathon texting session with Tommy. If it drops over the side of the roof, it’ll be toast for sure.
Placing my hands on my hips, I shout, “Seriously, Universe? Could you make this day any suckier? Ugh!”
I drop down to my hands and knees, bitter to give up my star watch to rescue a stupid phone. Cautiously, I crawl over the roof’s tiles. The rough texture digs uncomfortably into the bare skin of my knees as I inch down the slope of the roof. Wishing now more than ever for Jedi powers to move objects with my mind, I stretch out my arm. For once, I don’t mind I have a wingspan of an NBA star as my fingertips flutter closely to the phone with my long reach. I almost have it when a few tiles move underneath me. They start to shift and come loose under my weight, taking me for a ride along with them.
I make like a pancake to stop myself from moving any closer to the gutter, not caring to have any part of skidding over the edge of my extremely tall, two-story house. The sound of tiles shattering on our back patio is evidence enough of the trouble I’m in, the danger of my situation if I keep slipping.
While my heart beats as though it’s going to break free from my chest, I choke back the scream building up in my throat as I carefully turn myself around, slow as a desert tortoise, to crawl back up the roof. Grasping for any remaining tiles in my reach, I start to drag myself up when more tiles spring up and break free. With nothing left to hold onto, I slide back down the slope of the roof until half my body ends up dangling in the air over the lip of the gutter. In no time at all, I learn the gutter isn’t made to support a human’s body weight because it buckles, sending my phone and tumbler plummeting to the ground.
It’s hard to ignore the ringing in my ears as I cling with everything I have. All I can think is, I can’t die yet. I’m only seventeen. A girl has to at least land her first real kiss before she can die, right?
Beads of sweat roll down my forehead and sting my eyes. I want to rub my face on my arm, but feel paralyzed, scared any movement will cause me to fall. When I accept I’m not able to haul myself back up on my own, I start to really panic.
“Mom! Stan! Help!” I’m straining to be heard over the continuous hum of the house’s air conditioning units. “The roof... Hurry... Please!”
All at once, the gutter under my waist breaks away from the roof and I begin to free-fall. My arms and legs flail through the air as I watch the roof get farther away from me. I lose my stomach in my throat, disoriented and dizzy.
In seconds, I slam down on the concrete feet first before dropping onto my back. My head is last to hit the concrete and takes the least of the blow. I would be happy about that, except the wind is knocked out of me and my insides feel jarred loose. As I’m blinking away tears, it feels like my legs and spine have splintered into fragments. I taste blood in my mouth, and when I try to move, I can’t. White-hot, blinding pain blurs my vision. I’m left wheezing fast, shallow breaths when someone kneels beside me.
“Shhh. Don’t move,” a deep voice says.
If I could flinch in shock, I would have. The boy belonging to the voice came out of nowhere and I didn’t recognize him. Through my fuzzy vision I try to make out his face, but only see blondish swirls of hair, backlit by the patio’s motion detector floodlight. He places his large hands firmly onto my body—one palm on my forehead, the other on my chest. His skin feels cool, smooth. For a moment I almost relax, but then another wave of unbearable pain seizes me and I don’t care who this guy is—I just want the pain to stop!
“Hold on. I’m going to make you feel better. Just a few seconds more.”
He applies more pressure on my body with his hands, but in my frantic state, I can’t pinpoint where exactly I’m injured. It seems every bone, every nerve ending has been set on fire. On top of that, the boy’s touch is hurting me. If only I had a voice, I would order him to stop what he’s doing.
But then, before I can do or think anything else, it’s gone—the pain, the blurry vision, the gasping for air—all gone.
My lips move, trying to form a syllable. When I fail, I simply close my eyes and exhale— not from pain, but from relief. Surrendering to this newfound calmness spreading throughout my body, I feel the heavy shawl of sleep dragging me down to a surprisingly comfortable and safe place to rest. And so I do.
